I'm going to go propane on my 73 (yes, I know the disadvantages). I'm looking at 2 43.5# forklift tanks, mounted behind the seats.

Does anybody else have this tank setup, or different? Work out OK?

    Thanks!

A couple of friends are running those tank I believe (if thats just a standard forklift tank). I know they usually use a tank a day 5-8 hours of riding.

If you lay them on their sides in between the wheelwells (facing front to back) you can build a rack to go over them that way you still have some storage and keep them down low and protected. Another tip is to make a y fitting that ties into both tanks, that way when you run out all you have to do is close one tank and open the other without having to mess with changing the hoses over.

X2 on this, and as far as I'm concerned there are no disadvantages to going propane. Several of the guys in my club have gone with it, and that is the way I will be going as well on my next rig. It is simple to install and you don't have the birds nest of wires to have to worry about like with FI. Also, throttle response is excellent and any motor will really come to life with it, and there isn't any adjustment to have to worry about. Also, not to mention one guy that rides with us that has an EB with 44" swampers and a built 460 that can ride all day long on $16 worth of fuel. As long as you make sure you have spare tanks that are filled so you don't have to worry about trying to get them filled on the weekends, you should be fine.

Where do you get the stuff to do the switch?

I am running a carb now and what would be involved in the switch?

Do you have any web sites that explains what to do and the cost?

    Thanks in advance.

I can't help much there because I have been at work and missed out on both of the recent installs. I do know that it looks complicated when you get everything for the kit, but once you get started it is pretty simple to do from what both of them told me, and neither knew what they were doing until they got started on it. Like I mentioned, one was on a 460 and the other was on a 350 Chevy. All they had to round up was the bottom plate off of a Holley carb and a couple of hoses had to be made. They got their kits from a local guy here who is not even in business, but there are several companies out there that offer them. Both spent $700 or less, which is about the same as Holley Projection, and neither of them had much luck with their Projection. Also like I mentioned, they both said there is no adjustment to have to be done, so it is basically bolt on and go. I also know another guy who is running a 460 with a dual carb intake and about 600hp on propane, and he loves it too, but I don't know a whole lot about that truck.

About the main thing I can tell you is you will be very happy that you converted it. Oooo, and just wait 'til you get a look at the new clear tanks that are gonna be hitting the market pretty soon. Kinda like this, only they are the size you are talking about and you can get the frames in different colors or paint them however you want.
