They get pretty warm (hot) just from the location on the engine block. They also get hot when they go bad. When they go bad the engine will usually run good till the coil gets hot then it will just barely run. If you don't have a problem when the engine gets warmed up you're coil is probably ok. I just read your post under Lynn's fuse topic. Sounds like you might need a coil. I've only had one go bad personally. Jeep ran fine for about 10 minutes then all the sudden started barely running. Let it cool a few minutes and it would run a bit then just barely run, luckily I was able to limp home that way.

Sounds like my problem, got the choke wide open just to keep it running when the engine is warming up and it still sounds like its running on 3 cylinders, then it just dies for no reason like it ran out of gas. Then I can't start it for a while till it cools down.

Assuming you've verified everything else is good could very well be coil. Worth trying, even if it's not it having a spare is a plus.

OK so I got back from school today and decided to give it a crank and BANG! Sounded just like a gun shot or a fire cracker. I don't know what it was but it made my ears ring...high pitched, not low pitch like a back fire. Saw smoke from somewhere in the engine bay. Cranked it over again and it was fine but would not start.

Replaced the coil today with one from NAPA. Looks good now, cranks but no go. Pulled the plugs they keep getting soaked with fuel. The Carter keeps leaking bad up through the middle and drenching the intake inside and out. Pulled the carb and the inside of the intake was saturated with gas and the throttle linkage was really lose so It was due for replacement. So I just ordered a Solex from Krage.

I also checked the spark with a spark tester it was OK and checked the gap on the points they are at .020 like it is suppose to be.

What would cause it to make a noise like that, the smoke looked like it came from under the engine. Maybe somebody shot at me:shock: not in this neighborhood.

Is there any prep I need to do before I install the new carb?

Sounds like it backfired through the carb. Also sounds like it's flooding out pretty bad if the plugs are all wet. That could either be from cranking it too long without it starting, or the float is adjusted too high. Or there's a bad gasket in the carb. Backfires are almost always a timing issue...check your firing order, and check your static timing (set engine to #1 TDC and see where the rotor is).

I'll check my firing order and static timing tomorrow, but I am pretty sure they are right. As far as the float goes it measures to spec when upside down but I think the rubber seal on top of the accelerator pump arm didn't fit well and is allowing fuel to spill through the middle of the carb. also the gasket between the intake and carb is shot so the fuel that spills out goes strait to the intake.

Won't matter now with Solex coming, I can't wait i have heard good things about them.

Coil is shot . I just went through this with mine, the coil was hot even when the motor was off. I changed it and the points runs great.

Haven't had a Solex since I had my VW  . Heard nothing but good things about them here though. If you haven't already, I'd just go ahead and replace all your ignition parts too. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, coil, everything. Whenever I start working on an old rig that's usually the first thing I do. Helps eliminate the guesswork of potential problems. None of that stuff is all that expensive, and the frustration it saves is worth it. That, and I'll usually rebuild the carb. Sounds like you're well on your way...

I noticed this over the weekend. I had not driven mine since the previous night. Went to check the oil and brushed up against the coil and it was warm to the touch. I was going to post a question, but what it sounds like is that the coil is bad. Weird thing is, jeep seems to run fine, even when well warmed up.

Hey Rev...my problem was mine was hotter than the engine...they will be a little warm thats normal being attached to the side of the engine like that. Yours is probably fine, mine looked really old and worn out and rusty too.
