I decided to use the original column with my Saginaw steering conversion. My machinist buddy didn't like turning down the hollow shaft to fit the u-joint as per Advance Adapter's instructions. He cut the shaft shorter and pinned and welded a solid end. He then added a sleeve and made a bushing for the outer column. I got the 3/4 DD shaft and the u-joint from Summit Racing. They are Flaming River units and were cheaper from Summit than from Flaming River's web site. I got the spud shaft from Herm. He got it cheaper than AA. Used McRuff's mount design.

did you re-drill the pitman arm for the TRE to be mounted upside down ?
was their a particular reason for this ?
drag link hitting the spring or other clearance issues ?

For the time being I just flipped the pitman arm upside down on the steering box. Not the best way to go but the springs are soooo bad that the piman arm ended up below the tie rod. When I get the new springs on in the spring I will flip it back over.

...and $175 dollars more 'spensive unless you luck out and find one in the boneyard. They're rare as hen's teeth around here!

back when steering conversions were first being performed in the 50s and 60s there weren't any rules......
you did what you had to
    hasn't really changed today
some folks like bolt in conversions
others like to mod their own
    that's the beauty of Jeeps

I'd much rather do it myself and know what I have. I then know how to take it back apart and fix it.

I had one that someone welded a 1/2" snap-on universal to the end of the column and to a shaft. The guy ran it like that for 20 years, and was offended when I told him he was crazy. I kept the socket cause I didn't think anyone would believe the story. Since then I have been told that it was pretty common to use them in the 60's. Necessity is the root of all that is evil.

I really like to use PTO Universals. They are a little bulkier than others but use a standard U-joint that is available and are greasable. You can get the yokes with splines, Double D, Hex, square, whatever you want. They are plenty heavy duty too. Nickmil
