The pinion on the rear axle on my '47 has about a good 1/4" or more of play to it. I don't think that's right.

Axle shop suggested tightening the pinion back down and checking the pattern w/ some marking compound to see if the nut just backed off before bringing it in for an overhaul.

Does anyone know what the pinion nut torque should be on a Dana 41-2 (if I have that right on a stock '47 Willy's rear axle)?

According to my FSM, there is no mention of a torque setting for a pinion nut, only the clearances and contact pattern you should see when everything is bolted up.

I also have a Dana 41 in my '48 CJ-2A, and had what I thought to be an unacceptable amount of pinion backlash in my differential. After I installed a Lock-Rite kit in place of the spider gears, the slop was nearly all gone!

I'd suggest either going this route, or even just replacing the spider & side gears in the diff if everything else looks OK in there. You may be pleasantly surprised at the result!

might be more happening there than just tightening the nut......
I don't have the exact spec for the D41 in front of me, but since it is the cousin of the D44 (they use the same pinion bearings) the torque specs for the D44 are:
    pinion nut: 200-220 ft lbs
rotating torue using inch pound torque wrench: 10-25 inch lbs (seal not installed)
I don't see why you couldn't use these figures
    hope this helps

 I just realized that I was looking in an early CJ-2A manual, which only has the Spicer 23-2 axle in it.

Jim's numbers are correct according to my "other" manual.

Is the play vertical or rotational? Vertical play denotes pinion bearings being loose. Tighten the nut and check the preload. If it is too tight, then you need to put more shims behind the outer bearing to correct it. Then run a picture to insure the R+P are OK. If the play is rotational, then you need to check the carrier side/axle gears and thrust washers, as well as the R+P backlash. Also inspect the side gear shaft for movement in the carrier housing itself.

Seems to me he's talking vertical play, not unheard of for the nut to get loose, especially if someone else was in there and didn't tighten the nut properly. Even if tightening the nut cures it I'd definitely keep a close eye on it.
