I hear ya. I wasn't going to do this just yet, however I've had my eye out for a deal and this just came up. Was too good to pass up. Needless to say I'm stoked!

Yes, I noticed there is a bit of beach sand stuck to the rear housing. Guy said he pulled them off of a truck that had been sitting near the beach most of its life. I figure the rust that flakes off will just make them lighter.R)

This is one of those "stare at it" weekends where not much gets done. I just need to plan the attack.

Pulled the old rearend out. Size comparison.

Mocked up the new rearend under the jeep. Looks good to me. May be a bit wide, but its ok. Hubs don't stick out as far as I thought.

Trying to figure out how to do the rear truss. It'd be real easy to use some of the 1.75 Dom I have allready, but i don't think it would strong enough. I came up with an idea last night on how to do the upper mounts, but wound up accidentaly deleting it.

Anyways I need to get motivated to go out there.

Run a full length gusset w/ stamped holes like the desert guys. Didn't you do that someplace else already? Have to look back.:v6:

Thought about doing that with plate and started to mock it up last, however I decided that it was just going to be too much. A 9" rearend needs the plating, this D70 sure as heck doesn't! So after work I went and bought some 1.75"x.25wall tube for a truss. It doesn't need to reinforce the axle, just strong enough so that the links don't rip off. I think the tube will look lighter, not to mention be lighter. I'll probably do some gusseting and maybe a little plating to tie it all together.

Got the brake MC mounted yesterday so it wasn't a total waste.

Going to work on the clutch linkage now.

Not a whole lot to update in the past few weeks. I did get the clutch setup working and it seems to function nicely. I've given notice at work and that hasn't been an easy decision over the past few weeks, but after being a mechanic for 8yrs I've decided that july is my last month.:) So I'm not real sure how much more progress will be made on the jeep in the next few months. I may have a lot of time off to work on it, but with no money coming in I'll be hesitant to buy much for it. I don't know, all I know is that I'm done fixing cars for a living.R)

Anyhow I did figure out the rear link mount setup. I was going to do plate and make it fancy, but that would just be too much for this housing and it doesn't need the bracing. So, I bought a piece of tubing and almost broke my bender twice trying to bend it. Its 1.75x.25 DOM round tube. Its hard to bend! I almost ripped the tube holder mount off the main die on the first try, after rewelding and gusseting I tried again and started bending the main arms. A little extra strap and some more welding and all is good. I still need to get the mounts and add bracing as well as figure out exactly where it will be positioned etc.... You get the idea though.

    Enjoy!

I've been on vacation for the past 3 weeks after quitting my job. I'm finnnally getting back to this thing.

Got the seats and steering wheel mounted.

Got the bracing behind the fronts seats done. I wanted a simple X for some lateral cross bracing, but it wouldn't fit around the seats. So I came up with this. Should be strong.

After that I started working on the rear coilover mounts. This took awhile as nothing was lining up how I envisioned it. However I figured it out and it looks ok.

I'm not happy with the lower link mounts now and I want to push the links further outboard on the axle. This will help line up the shocks better and will also help the rear link geometry. Here is a mocked up shot of how the shock should look when done.

I also have some more work to do with the lower links anyhow.

Its two steps forward and one step back around here.R)

    Enjoy!

Kevo what kind of MC is that for your brakes? I like it. Is it for all disc? My vette MC is starting to leak so it is time for me to either change it out with the same kind of with a new one :)

Its a Willwood tandem MC. Its a 1" bore. I had the vette or whatever it is 1 1/8" bore mc on there before and the pedal was too stiff, so this smaller bore should fix that. I think the 1" bore vette mc's were for non power brake applications so that should work.

Finished up the rear links and coilover mounts and now I'm moving on to the front axle.

Finnally cut the front housing down. For some odd reason the dually axles didn't match in width at all. The front was 77" and the rear was 73" wide, so I cut 3.5" out of the long side of the front. I have done this before with the old front so its nothing new, just bigger parts.
    Cut the inner C off.

Cut the tube to length. Remember measure twice and cut once!

Then I ground the weld down on the inner C and pressed the remaining bit of tube out of the inner C. After cleaning up the inner C and end of the axle housing I can reassemble. Generous use of the torch to heat the C up allows it to slide right on while I set the caster.

Luckily the press fit supports the weight and the weld just keeps it from rotating on the tube. I then cut out and welded in some inner C gussets. Figured I might as well do it while its appart.

I've finnaly gotten the old frontend out of the way and I need to get the front and rearends and tires sold so I can buy some new tires for mockup. The new frontend is under the jeep, but I need to buy more brackets, and highsteer etc...., before I do much more with it. Luckily I start the new job tuesday so hopefully I can keep this thing going!:)

    Enjoy!
