Just a small project

    Finaly got the steering box mounted and the panhard mount done. The panhard mount required a lot of planning and work to make it fit. I think its sufficiently strong, more gussets are coming though.

    Here it is at full right lock and everything clears. Even have room to add a square tube gusset in the front. The mount ties in to the opposite side frame rail further tieing the frame together and keeping the driverside from flexing due to the steering box.

    Still need to finish that rear trans crossmember.

    Little help w/ terminology please. I don't know what the panhard and the panhard mount refers to. Thanks.

    Panhard keeps the axle located lateraly, side to side, under the framerail. Hence the panhard mount is just the mount for the panhard link. Ideally, you want the panhard link and draglink to be the same length, angle and location as possible so as not to have any bumpsteer. Thats not easy to do with my setup, but I've got it as close as possible. According to my computer measurements I've got 1/4" of bumpsteer over 14" of travel. Hopefully thats good enough. I noticed a newer grand cherokee in the shop yesterday that has an identical setup to what I intend to build so I am fairly confident it will work OK.R)

    I'm not working on it tonight, but I did go and see dave today. Luckily my pass high steer arm came in and I started buying joints for the suspension. I don't think I'll get to doing links untill after t-day at this rate. Oh well, that just gives me more time to acquire parts.:)

    OK, nother update.

    Finnaly got bolts so I could finish the rear skidplate crossmember on saturday.

    Which meant that I could flip the frame on sunday and weld everything on the bottom side.

    Also added a few gussets and this plate to the panhard mount.

    Its now right side up and the motor is back in. However the trans is sitting on the floor waiting to be taken to work. Its getting torn down and a full rebuild, cleaning, new paint.

    I actually feel like I accomplished something this weekend. Now its time to tear the jeep apart. I have allready removed the seats and harness along with the gauges. The axles need to come out so I can do the suspension next. I figure the weekend after T-day I'll be firing up the torch.

    No work next weekend, I'm going to oregon for T-day!

    Definatley cool, I am enjoying watching your progress. Looks great!
    You must have some kind of master plan all drawn up for this thing right? I know I would be welding on, cutting off even with a plan!
    I must admit when you fist started this thread I had my doubts about a quality frame fab, but you have done a professional job so far. Keep up the good work and look forward to your posts. Greg

    Well, after my 2 week vacation from this project I got back to it finally. It was time to take the old girl apart. I got most of the accessories, lights, wiring etc... off this thing on saturday. I can't believe how much wiring is in this thing! I think I am going to have to come up with a new wiring plan for it too simplify things a bit.

    Tub is junk. No really it wasn't worth saving at all.

    Its been awhile since I've updated this thing. Holiday madness has gotten in the way. Luckily I made it into and out of denver airport in between snow storms. No waiting for me!

    However I did get home and find some time to do some mock up of body parts. I got the hood set on the engine more or less. Thats one of my old 36" swampers on the ground for clearance checking.

    I also cut the back off the grill so its only the front 3/4" of grill left and I notched it to fit into the frame. I still have .5" untill anything hits the hood on the motor. The hood is 54" from the floor to the top of the rear of the hood. It seems lower, but I honestly don't know. It looks like overall height will be in the 73-74" range with 38"ish tires. The next buggy will be a V6 or a V8 for a more compact setup. I am happy for now however.

    I mocked a seat up. Its very hard to tell if its in the right spot with no pedals or anything else around it. However its fun to sit in for the time being.

    I'm trying to figure out what to do with the cowl area. The way I want to fit it in would be easier if I just got rid of all of the firewall. Its difficult to figure out how to run the tubing, old cowl/firewall sheetmetal, pedal situation, and new firewall sheeting etc.... There is lot going on where your feet are and its one area I had issues with trying to redo the floors. I'm trying to find a simple clean solution for it all.

    I'm also debating on running my old brake MC or trying something like a wilwood dual master setup.

    Great Work!!! --- this hes ben a great project I really enjoy watching a TRUE CRAFTSMAN at work. I feel your pain working in a small area reminds me of my shop.

    It is very cramped now. It wasn't too bad when it was just frame width, but now tripping over the axles and having the hood in the way is kinda a pain. I might set up the suspension and get this thing into roller status before I do the cage work. I could then just roll it into the driveway and work on it then roll it back into the garage at night.

    My roomate is the ultimate pack rate. About 3yrs ago he decided to clean out the garage. We pulled out a ton of stuff to scrap. One toyota 4runner frame, two toyota rearends, one toy front housing, various springs, 3 toy gas tanks, something like 13 engines in various states of brokeness. He just keeps collecting junk thinking that if he doesn't use it he can at least sell it on e-bay. I keep telling him its not making any money sitting on the floor of our garage. He doesn't seem to get it.:rofl: Good thing hes not in business.

    In theory he is getting married and moving out before summer. I'm not holding my breath yet.

    BTW, he has a huge aircompressor for sale if anyone is interested. Unfortunately its 3 phase, but he'll sell it cheap!

    Honestly haven't been doing much to it lately. I'm still waiting on material and I finally got word today that its starting to come in. I'll probably go next weekend to pick it up and then some real progress can start. We've been working on the house some so that takes up time on the weekends and its been too cold at work to make me want to spend evenings in a freezing garage. I've also met a new girl, thats kinda like the ultimate jeep sin.R)

    However, I did take delivery of my new rims last friday.

    Two piece military hummer rims with runflats. I'll have to recenter them, but when they're done I'll have some nice double beadlocks. I'll just have to find some bigger tires for them.:rofl:

    Looks like I'll be working on the trans later this week/weekend.
