It's been a while since I was into a D44. Does the carrier have to come out to remove the cross shaft roll pin? Does the ring gear need to come off to pull the cross shaft with the 3.73 gears? I'm dropping an Aussie locker in this week and just need a memory refresher.

With some ratios the carrier/ring gear will have to be removed. When you remove the rear cover if you can tell, just look for tooth clearance at the crossshaft hole. I had to remove the carrier(5.38s), just match mark the bearing bosses to make sure you don't get them reversed or mixed up. Pick up a set of new side gear thrust washers to help get the minimum clearance(maximum locker teeth engagement) that the mfg calls out for. Don't forget the thrust block btween the axles if equipped.

I had to pull the ring gear on 3.73s, the cross shaft wouldn't quite clear.

On higher ratios like 3.54 and higher(numerically lower), it will probably clear.

Thanks. I kinda figured the ring gear would have to come off, just wanted to see what others had run into.
