I run 85w90 in the axles and 85w140 in the tranny/transfer. But I don't run my jeep in winter (much).

I ran 85w140 and when I got to CO that was way to thick in my opinion last winter. I am using 85w90 now.

I've noticed that in really cold weather regular 90W gear old turns to goo so bad you can really feel it. Synthetic gear oil seems to be far less affected by the cold. OTOH, it's really expensive...and if you've got the "perma drip" it might not be worth it. . There was one winter when I was in high school driving my VW bug that it was so cold the engine would stall when I let the clutch out...because the gear oil was too thick! I changed to sythetic and it worked ok. Still didn't have heat, but at least the car would move.

I run 80-90 in axles, tranny, and t-case. Bought a bucket of Valvoline ($ouch$) . It is great oil but with drips and such next time I'll buy the cheap stuff.

    Re: dana 18 /t-90

would guess about a gallon and a 1/2. better off having some extra to top off the tranny/transfer with.

I'm using 90-140 and my syncro's have been a little sticky. The tranny was almost empty when i finally got oil in it in June. I'm wondering whether i damaged the syncros because of the low oil level or the oil is too thick. Any thoughts?

140 is OK for diffs, works well with lockrights to quiet them down.
Trannys are generally designed for 90 wt, and work best with 90 wt.
Especially in your area Bruce, it's way too cold in the winter for 140 in your tranny. I'd drain and refill yours. You might even consider going to Redline Synthetic... many guys have said minor "sticking" problems disappear after running Redline...

I changed my trans and transfer case lube from 90-140 back to 80-90 and my syncros are acting more like they should. I can't imagine what it would have been like in January. thanks
