Currently the rear tag is bolted onto the taligate of my '65. As I'm going to be mounting a swing out tire carrrier, I'm going to have to mount the tag some other place. I was just wondering where most of you put it, on the left side of the rear bumper?

Mine is in the factory location (under the left tail light), but I need to move it. It looks like a wadded up peice of paper now. If you off-road much, you'll find out why the factory location is not so good....

However, if you do move it out from under the tail-light, it may not be legal anymore (no light at night).

For a long time, I left mine in the factory spot, but fixed it to a plate which was "hinged" with a piece of laminated rubber off one of my printing presses. It flopped around in the breeze, but wouldn't get hung up so easy. Lasted for years, 'til the rubber finally deteriorated. Now, it's just backed with a fairly stout piece of plate and fixed solid. The backing plate can bend, but the license plate won't.

Since I run late-model CJ taillights, I also use the late CJ bracket that bolts behind the taillight assembly. This still leaves the left side of the plate somewhat exposed to damage in tight situations

I thought this was a good spot, but you have to have the right bumper set up....and in this pic I didn't have the swing out in place.

    I thought this was a measure of a person's JEEP usage R)

Mine is dented and curling pretty bad...but I bend it back to straight every once in a while. I figure the license plate should look as bad as the rest of my CJ5.

THanks for the responses. I think I'll just bolt it onto the left side of the bumper and let it get the curled up look. The other possibility is on the swing out tire carrier itself if there is room.

I made a stainless plate with a small 90* bend at the bottom that bolts to the rear cross member. About 14 years later, still working:)

I moved the taillights up higher, mounted backup lights underneath them (which are a wonderful upgrade btw) then mounted the plate to a bracket under the backup lights. If the plate was in the stock location the Hi-Lift would obstruct it and the exhaust would be pointing straight at the back of the plate.

You can fit the plate next to the tailgate if you're willing to roll it around the corner a bit. I put mine there so it can still be seen when I have the spare tire on the back.
