Since the battery tray is part of the frame mine is connected to the vertical part of the tray.

Should be attached to the engine somewhere to get a good ground with the starter, IIRC. Clean all the paint, rust and grease off of wherever you attach it.

Just checked my FSM, and it mentions the negative cable going to the frame. Doesn't say where, but I'd assume someplace below the battery mount. Also shows a ground strap from the right motor mount plate on the engine, right below the generator, going to one of the bolts that attach the motor mount to the frame.

    FWIW.

I'm sure there was a certain place the factory put it, but essentially you can attach it anywhere on the frame or engine, it just needs to be a good electrical ground with the chassis. No paint, rust or other crud in the way.

I just had my frame powdercoated, so I won't be attaching my battery ground to that, I'll likely take it to the engine. But the engine still needs to be strapped to the frame for a good ground, the rubber engine mounts tend to act as insulators. Same with the body tub, it's usually strapped somewhere from the firewall to the back of the engine. Everything's gotta be connected for good electrical grounding thoughout the chassis, so that lights and guages, etc., will work right.

I went strait to the frame with my negitive cable. But I do have a really large ground strap going from the frame to the motor.

The negative of the battery should be connected to the frame of the jeep.

The engine ought to be strapped to the frame (electrically) to tie the engine to the frame.

But I always connect the battery to the frame since the frame is the primary grounding system for the jeep.

If you have had the tub off the jeep it is not a bad idea to tie the tub to the frame to ensure a good ground from the body.

Bad or high resistance grounds can cause a whole lot of awfully wierd symptoms in the electics of your jeep.
