My 59 CJ5 came with a switch someone installed that allowed the Jeep lights to work when being towed. I've never really been able to make it work right. I generally use a trailer for long tows, but would like to use a tow bar for shorter hauls. Does anyone know how to wire for this?

i read the previus post and that will work .the way i have always done it is to tap into the taillight, right turn and left turn.you can extend the taillight and right turn with one wire each to the front bumper.on the left turn extend a LOOP to the front and install a toggle switch in the wire that goes back to turn signal sw.this breaks the circuit in switch so no feed back.when your done towing simply close the toggle switch.

I simply unplugged the bullet connecters down by the Ross box, and tapped in a 4 way flat trailer plug on the inner fender. Just unplug it and plug in my harness from the trailer plug on the truck...

I read your writeup boyink, I have a LT1 with the computer and everything out of a 96 TransAm in my cj, works very well! I guess I don't understand what the feedback would do from the tow vehicle, If your jeep headlight switch was turned off and the brake light swith not activated, I would think there would be no problems, I bought a tow bar and am getting ready to install, I like your safety cable set up.

You know -- I'm not really sure what feedback would cause - maybe nothing on these old Jeeps. I just figured for the couple bucks the diodes cost and few minutes it takes to solder them in it was the "right thing to do", and worth not finding out I had burned out a headlight switch or something.

You're welcome to try it and report your findings...;)

On second thought - I'm looking at the wiring diagram for a ECJ5 V6 model. If you feed 12V to the tailight circuit, it looks like you'd be feeding it to the lights in the instrument cluster, and on the brakelight circuit into the turn signal unit and possibly to the front turn signals.

Seems like someone once said they had front turn signals coming on before preventing feedback.

At any rate, looking at the wiring I'd still take the time to either do the diodes or just set it up such that the Jeep harness unplugs and the tow vehicle plugs into one side only.

You can also get blocking diodes at most trailer supply stores. They have spade connectors. That's what I used. Before I put those in I couldn't get my lights to work at all. They were considerably more expensive than the ones from Radio Shack though. However, thay are rated for the amp draw of the lights.
