    Hello All,

I have been looking at web sites till my eyes are crossed trying to ID the engine in my Jeep. The PO told me it wasn't the original engine and it was replaced with a rebuilt. I was wondering what year model I have in order to upgrade/replace items as needed. The only reference I have is the block casting number 3224098 and a H6 stamped above it. This number is stamped on the right hand side (facing the front) of the block just above the oil pan and under the exhaust manifold. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Tim, I was searching for "Engine Serial Numbers" on this site and was turning up all sorts of information but none related to "Engine Build Date" as you provided. I was also using the wrong number from the block, I guess the number I was using is a casting number and not the build information. Finally, using your much appreciated information and my correct engine information, 804 A 28 would mean my engine is a 1975 258 Single Barrel, built on the 28th of April. The Build Date of my CJ is also April of 1975, so now I wonder if it could be the original engine to the Jeep and the PO was misinformed. Thanks again.

Tony, this question gets asked a lot. Jim (jpflat2a) gave the best answers with scans from the Jeep parts books. He's a fount of useful Jeep knowledge.

    Glad I could help.
