Does anyone have a 3-point hitch on the rear of their Jeep? I have heard about them and am interested in doing this to a early 60's model. This will be a long term project, so don't look for pics anytime soon. Just trying to get my head right. Is there a kit for this? Do I just use old tractor parts? Rear PTO to hydrolic pump?

I want to do this to cary hay, disk my arena, box blade my driveway, etc. I have a tractor, but think it would be neat to turn this old junker into a small utility vehicle. I plan on cutting off the tub behind the front seats and creating a dump type body. This will be used like a Gator with added benifits.

Presently the Jeep is a junker. I have aquired a F-head motor, both axles, trans and transfercase to go in. I am sure they will all need to be gone through before install, but like I said this is a long term project.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly apreciated

I hope it is okay to post this link here to Derek Redmond's 3B page. http://www.film.queensu.ca/cj3b/FarmJeep.html Anyway, it will give you some pictures and info on the three point hitch, and farm jeeps in general. I have no idea where you might find one built especially for a Jeep, but from the sound of it, you are probably not interested in a purist's restoration anyway. You might also have a look at the 3a and 2a pages linked from Derek's site; they all have some pictures, history, and info on farm Jeeps and accessories.

I saw that one on there too.............$1800:rofl:  Original Jeep stuff is REALLY rare, if you can find it. If you're gonna flatbed it, I'd look for an old snow plow assy and mount it on the rear. Lower pivots fabbed on where you need them, 3 pt hitch arms robbed from old dead tractor, plow lift to raise and lower. Add a rear PTO if you want to run a mower. There's a pic on here somewhere of a yellow '5 with a mower, I'll try and find the link.

Look up member "godevil" here on this forum, he uses farm equipment on his ECJ5. We had a discussion last week about suspension/springs and weight of implements; I believe he may have some good info for your planning. Also see the September JP magazine, look inside for the yellow CJ5 pulling a disc unit in the field... that's Donnie's :)

Good luck, keep us up to date on your project... got pics? :)

    Have a look at this

Farm jeep stuff is $$$, if you want the PTO/rear gear box setup figure $600 or so. Don't even ask what an engine governor will set you back, assuming you can even find one. This stuf is going way up in price as more people get into restoration.

    63CJ5,
I have a homemade 3 point lift and will gladly share any info you may need.
Most of my headaches have been trying to keep the Jeep untouched and use original bolt holes. My whole system can be removed with 6 bolts.
The Jeep will pull anything we have attached to it, but lifting is your weak point.
A simple snowplow power up gravity down electric/hydrolic pump works well. While I would have loved to find all original Jeep equipment I quickly realized that it would cost a fortune and you would want to put the Jeep in a bank vault when you were done.
I would love to have the freedom you will have with not keeping the bed on the truck.Lots of oppertunity to overbuild for strength.
    Here is a pic,good luck.

I have some pictures on the Midwest Willy Reunion webpage of flatfender and ECJ5 setups.

Not bashing but buyer beware on anything sold by Alansjeep on eBay. Read the ad look at pictures closely, and ask direct questions. A lot of the Monroe stuff is broken and repaired but he still wants premium prices.

He also put a Newgren set up on eBay , when that $1800 Newgren setup was on to try and keep the price down. He hijacked the exact ad title. He later stopped his auction early, and accused the guy of selling junk when he called him out on it.

I have some pictures on the Midwest Willy Reunion webpage of flatfender and ECJ5 setups.

I have a 3B with a Monroe 3 point hitch. I sold the hydraulic pump a year or so ago, and one of these days I'll put a hydraulic power pack on the jeep.

If you need a picture or some measurements from the rear unit, I'll be happy to send them to you.

Over the years I've had around six of these things in various stages of operability. They are not common, but can be found if you keep your ear to the ground.

Last one I bought I got with the whole jeep on ebay. That's a pretty good way to get one because if you remove the hitch you still have a jeep to sell to recoup some of the cost.

The most recent jeep I got with the hitch went to south Georgia, hitch and all.

I have been looking around since I posted this. So far everyone agrees that this will be expensive. Maybee some more info will help me get ideas to push the price down.

"Most of my headaches have been trying to keep the Jeep untouched and use original bolt holes."
I am not a purist. The body is too far gone to do anything with anyway. It will be cut up, beat up, whatever, this will be a farm use vehicle and will be treated as such. It will be used and abused. $1800 is more than I have spent buying two Jeeps and an additional drive train.

I would like to use the existing "bed" and simply weld a front plate to keep the cargo out of my lap. Maybee a electric screw lift to dump?

I do have access to farm machinery and a junkyard for the same. Using tractor parts will not hurt my feelings. Also, my father in law is pretty handy with tractor repair.

I am glad to see responses from people who have done this. I have mentioned this to a few non-Jeepers and they looked at me like I had lost my mind. Please continue to provide any information you can think of no matter how small you might think it is. I am fairly new to all of this and what is common sence to you might be the tid-bit that has me beating my head against the wall.

    Hi,

My name is Steve. I’ve looking to add a 3-point to mine and
I very much like your 3-point design. I found your thread dated
August 2005 on the Early CJ5 web site and was wondering if I
could trouble you for some more information on it. If it’s possible
could send me a few more pictures or dimensions you used?
In reading your message I have the same belief you do….Keep it
untouched and less holes are better. Looking at your picture I can
see the 6-mounting bolts. 4 in the frame and 2 straight down. But
I can’t tell what that is mounted to? Also, I’m a little confused to the
top fulcrum bar. It looks a little wider on top where the bar goes
through? If I could see a side view that might help me a little…

    Thanks for your help!!!

If you were creative you could fabricate a box for an 8N Ford tractor hitch to sit in in your bed, and use all the controls for position and draft from the 8N setup. The 9N/2n Setup does not have position control, so that's why I would recommend the later one. I have seen a homebuilt hitch with this setup on Ebay one time, and it looks like it will function similarly to the Monroe. You will need a pump to plumb into the hitch , I wouldn't try to use the Ford pump.

The thing I like about the pictured design is it mounts behind the Jeep and does not take up room int he bed. The pump is another subject. Is it possible to use a power steering pump both for the hydraulics and for power steering? I assume I would need a bigger reservoir, but how big would it need to be?

Gotta be at least as big as the capacity of the cylinder......plus what you would normaly have for PS. More than that will add some cooloing to the fluid which is good to have. Might look into an old snowplow pump setup too.. The old aluminum ones that clamped on the generator, with the plow control attached were pretty decent. I agree with you on the usefulness of having the cylinder behind the bed. I think the Newgren was this style...

If you only want position control, and don't need the three point to adjust itself to the drag on the implement (draft control) it shouldn't be too hard to build. Draft control is pretty much useful only for a dirt plow anyway. ALl your arms and links are all available at Tractor Supply, you will want category one stuff.

Do you have a build thread on that three point? It's sweet!
