I guess this would go here. I've decided to run a beefed up AMC 20 rear (the one I have), instead of diving into regearing just yet. I know of course to change out the axles for 1 piece. My question is if I want to weld the tubes to the housing, should I remove the axles first? Then should I just spot weld it or weld it all the way around?

Might want to weld a little and then weld on the opposite side of the tube then go back to the first side. Just keep alternating sides.

    What about preheating and postheating?

When I worked as a welder as a kid (early 80's) the shop would only weld axle tubes in a jig. You stich welded them alternating sides (around the tube) with 3/4 to 1" segments. They were slightly preheated to keep distortion down to a min.

Back then - we used 7018 - now days .35 with mixed gas... I am NOT a welder by trade any longer, others might have a better understanding of the newer stick rods or updated conventions.

I'm probably gonna arc it, simply because I don't have a gas MIG or anything else. I've got a flux core MIG but it's not enough to get good penetration on the differential housing.

Take your time - keep a heating torch handy and keep it heated evenly. One of the older guys said the most important things was to keep it tight in the jig - even heat, not too much - to keep it from twisting and help penetration and annealing.

You have now exhausted my memory of the process :) Good luck
