I have a friend who has only driven jeep's since getting his DL in '75. He say's my jeep is NOT a jeep since some factory parts are AMC and the running gear is Kiaser? The listed rollout date is august 70 but the truck was special order and didn't make it out of the factory till january 71. delivery was march 3rd, 71. It was never changed or modified untill I got it last year so I know what it had stock and I have the build sheet on it that my grandpa got when he picked it up at the dealership.

Not to be a jerk about it...but your friend needs to read up on Jeep history prior to getting his license.

You have a transitional year Jeep.

How could it not be a JEEP? Even those Daimler/Chrysler things are called Jeeps. R)

Sorry Boyink is right your friend needs to educate himself al ittle better, obviously he doesn't know 1/2 of what he thinks he knows. Even as a transitional year there wasn't much if any parts on that Jeep that AMC designed. The design was already set in stone about 2 years before it was built. In those days it took on average 3-5 years to design an entire vehicle. So even with AMC's purchase of Kaiser they would have had little time to make any major improvements. They were to busy redesigning the jeep for the 72 model year, and even then it wasn't a total redesign.

It's a Jeep, and I don't really see how anyone could say it wasn't. Heck, apparently to alot of people, my Samurai and my EB were both Jeeps.

83" wheelbase? You've stretched it? Should be '81".

'71s do have AMC emblems on them from the factory. Prolly just came off or was removed along the way.

just drove the 70 cj for the first time. I don't care what anyone says about how ugly it is, I LOVE IT!!!R) R) just to be behind the wheel of a jeep........ oh boy!

I agree that jeep's should have round headlights, but aslong as it's a jeep jeep and not a cherokee or "liberty":smash: (I've only seen Nellies in those)then it must be a Jeep!

After AMC purchased Kaiser in January of 1970, dealers started putting small, about 1" square AMC emblems on the tail gates. My 70 Renegade I has one. They remained on the 71's also. The 71's just got VIN tags that read Jeep Corperation instead of Kaiser. The 4 speed tranny was a special order item and hard to find. I say keep it, restore it to original condition and run circles around the YJ's. Just my .02 worth.

Heyheyhey! They're not THAT bad! Don't know that I'd run out and buy one, though. Since I've been with my current employer, I've had a '98 Cherokee, a 2000 Cherokee, and they just gave me a new '06 Liberty. Plus they pay all the gas, maint. and parking costs. That kinda eases the shame of being seen in one a little.R)

My girlfriend has the ULTIMATE Libby with everything you can order and she can't get over things that my stock 71 cj5 gets over in 2 wheel drive with an open diff! But as a street SUV I can see a use for it, maybe as a speed bump, just kidding. those things are by no means designed for real off-road use so I guess they are okfor what they CAN do!

AMC emblems were factory installed, not by the dealer as I recall.

You have a modified jeep. Dana 18 t/c did not come with dual levers in 71.

If you have the t-98 then it was modified to go behind your v-6

The jeep had a v-6 from the factory

Flanged rear axle was stock in 71

    Sounds interesting.

I'd say you have a JEEP and your buddy has a JOOP with "E" decals.

  19. If it looks like a jeeps, runs like a Jeep, drives like a Jeep, & smells like a Jeep, I'd be inclined to say it's a Jeep. Tell your buddy to join this site & let the schoolin' begin!

the problem is this jeep IS all origional since I have the origional Special Order build sheet that my grandpa got with the jeep. He ordered it with the dual stick and t98and it took a long time to get it done AT THE FACTORY. The truck was also ordered in OD flat green.
