Ordered both inner and outer axle seals for my 69' CJ-5 with Dana-44 Tapered axles. (part #914802 outer) The inners are OK,same diameter (#640959 inner) but the outers are bigger. I am waiting for a reply from the people I bought the parts from, but was wondering if anybody knew if there are different seals for this axle? Part #'s? I'm thinking I got the wrong part. Is there Any parts store that carry these seals? I appreciate any help.
    Thanks,Jerry

Jerry, you receieved the correct seals, I believe. The large or outer seal and retainer is where the wheel hub machined surface will ride. So the inner is supposed to keep gear oil from working its way to the outer axle end and the large outer seal keeps wheel bearing grease from getting into the brakes. If both fail, there should be a large metal deflector bolted on that lets the oil drip straight to the bottom without it being thrown all over (in theory anyway)

Jim,thanks for the good info.I was just not too sure because the large outer seal I just took off, fit tight over the axle shaft. They were the same diameter as the inners. Maybe the guy I bought it from put on different seals. Just want to put it back correct. Any thoughts or suggestions??
    Thanks,Jerry

Hmmm.....inner seal goes in tube...axle shaft and bearing go in next...then shims(if there are any) then thick bearing retainer plate, then backing plate, then outer seal and retainer, gaskets (if used) then grease shield or protector. Then all the bolts and bolt it up.

Where did this other large seal go ? In what order ?
If I remember correctly, the order I stated above should be correct, other than the shims, depending which side you have apart

    What became of this?

I just ordered outer seals from Krage. The ones Krage sent have a much larger inner diameter, than the ones I spent $40 for that are identical to what came off. I'd love to use the new ones; they look better and were cheap, but I'm afraid they will not fit.

The outer grease seals are made to fit over the hub. In other words when they're bolted on, when you slide the hub on it will fit inside the seal. Make sense? Do the seals you got have a metal ring with holes matching the end of the axle housing holes?
