so I bought a new pertronix unit, and for some reason I think its the wrong unit. My unit says to bolt on the lower ignitor plate to the casing which would cause me to disassesmble the distributor. I cant remember the part number but I need number 1165 correct? How easy is it to install? I dont have to pull the distributor shaft out correct? Do I just get the unit for a 225 even tho my engine is a 231? My distributor is a delco unit. Thanks Much

The note below is essentially what is shown on the Pertronix website:

    Buick
1967-61 6 cyl, All V-6 models .(odd fire engine) Delco, #1165

    1974-68 6 cyl, All models . Delco, #1162A

    Jeep
    1968-66 6 cyl, 225 V-6 . (odd fire engine) Delco, #1165

They are confused about applications/model years... but nevertheless, all 225 V6 OF with Delco dist use the 1165 kit.
The same "should" apply if you are running a Delco points distributor in an OF 231, 74 vintage through early 77.

You should not need to take the distributor out if you don't have too much distributor climb... (a measurement you will need to make with a feeler gage, per the instructions.)
Assuming you don't need to pull the distributor, there is a bit of minor disassembly you need to do inside the distributor, removing the points, and attaching the sensor, and bolting the magnet ring to the rotor... all pretty easy stuff. Even if you've never worked under a distributor cap, this should take you less than an hour. If you've ever changed points before, then this should take about 20 minutes.

HTH, let us know how it goes
