OK I'm gonna show my stupidity here. My 80 has flat sides, but a 76 I was looking at has a divit molded into the side just above the rear wheel. I've seen plenty of Jeeps both ways, but never payed attention.
What was the divet for originally ( top bows or something?) and when did they disappear. The only other difference I see between the two is the 76 has a tailgate, and my 80 dosen't . But I know that was an option throughout the run.

I think the whip antenna went into the divit on the older jeeps, it was still kinda military style.

The divit is a carryover from the military M38A1. It was used for the top framework.
