realistically speaking,

    Since this 57 jeep (completely stock) has not been on actual pavement since the year I was born,........IF the engine fires up(after an obvious major tune up and R&R most everything that is dead or dying) what type of 0-60 or 45,40,35 should one expect?

    the only time i've been in this when it was running was in and around my grandparents home, and that was some time ago.

    The reason I ask this, is if the engine is way past needing its last rights, would like a I-4 toyota work without major mods? And with having a PTO winch I would like to keep er' stock as much as possible, but if there is a need to replace the engine why not go up to date with EFI right? or is this a major crack dream?

    Oh and engine/tranny mounts should not be a problem, i have a friend that builds and races small block 1/4 mile cars primarily front engine style.

    While it may be possible to put a Toyota engine in a ECJ, I'm sure you would burn in the everlasting fires of Hell for doing it. Lol If you want more power and fuel injection why not use a Chevy 4.3 V6. The other advantage to not using a Toyota engine is you won't have to wear your hat backwards.

    I have to admit, the Toyota engines do last a long time. Although I personally would not adapt one into my jeep. I would like to use the 4.3L V6 myself, they're plentiful and reasonably priced.

    Nope would not use a toyota engine in a Jeep. Why because once you rebuild one they never seem to want to stay together long. My old camary was like that and I believe Sharadans pickup had the same problem. Now a honda motor on the other hand :evil:

    pinto 2000 or 2300 4 banger.

    millions available, cheap to rebuild and can be hopped to 200+ HP if ya got the coin.

    mini stock racing has made the hop up parts fairly easy to get.

    The Pinto can be an easy swap because the bell is shallow enough that the the stock T-90 stickout will reach the Pinto pilot bushing with enough distance left over for a plate adapter. You need to find the right bell though - not all 2000/2300 bells will work. The Falcon 144/170 will do that too, but an inline 6 is too long for the engine compartment without cutting the firewall.

    Using an engine that fits a GM bell has the advantage of an easily available adapter. There were quite a few SBC-to-T90 adapters sold, and you can find them cheaply on the used market. This adapter provides lots of different opportunities wrt 4, 6 and 8 cylinder engines, including the Buick and Chevy V6s. There are some unexpected and appealing options with the SBC adapter too, like the AMC/Jeep 150 cid 4 cylinder from a Wrangler.

    I seem to remember that the pinto engines were a popular choice for these swaps back some twenty years ago, thanx for the memories.:)

    If you have a '57 that's completely stock, why not just rebuild the F-head that's in it and keep it stock? Ain't nothing wrong with those motors. That's what I would do, unless the block has frozen and cracked or there's other major fubar inside. In fact, that's what I'm doing with my '56, and that's why I've picked up three more F-heads that were free. Now I have lots of extra parts, and plan to build a spare motor for future use. It doesn't need to go fast, it needs to go s-l-o-w for crawling and climbing. JMHO.

    I'd like to keep it stock as possible, but will be kind of a commuter vehicle, I have a toyota tacome that is rather thirsty for petro, and with the soaring gas prices, 4 is better then 6. How does your stocker do with commuting on the interstate? I work 30 miles away from home, and the speed limit is 60. Most of the older jeeps that I see around here have 305 or 350's stuffed in them, and granted I do have a spare 350 just hangin out.

    My situation is kinda different. I too commute 50 miles a day 40 of it on interstate. I'm restoring my '56 to showroom stock condition as basically a toy, a round-town runabout and mild scenic trails Jeep. Kinda like the old guy down the block with the slick old Model A Ford, ya know? I have a company Jeep Liberty, and they pay the gas, so commuting isn't a problem.

    You probably won't do much better with milage in one of these toys. I think the best I have heard from anyone was 22MPG normal was around 15. The problem is wind resistance, your taco is a bullet compaired to these old Jeeps.
