Dana 18 ... am I missing something here

    gee... mine looks different. :(

    on the left (where the orangish bracket is) is where the PTO/Brake/OD goes... correct???

    btw, when I took the pan off, about 2 quarts of water came out followed by some pink oil looking stuff.... <sigh>

    Yep, you are correct, it looks like that orange bracket was used along with the torque mount on the passenger side of the case in lieu of a crossmember. Interesting idea.

    Brake goes on the right on the output yoke.

    is that a Turbo 400? That setup is a new one for me ,haven't seen that before.

    Pink oil sounds like ATF and water. The seal between the transfer case and the TH400 should keep them from mixing. Hopefully you don't have gear oil in the ATF too.

    is it just me or is that a D20 case ? (with 18 innards)
    see the thimbles/caps for the shift rails, just above the year yoke
    thought those were used only on the 20

    Commando trans/t-fer in a CJ-6? That would explain the lack of a parking brake.

    The mounting method is kinda neat - gets rid of the cross member which makes more clearance. I would observe that the trans pan especially needs a skid plate, and I would change the way the short mount on the passenger side is configured. With the rubber block on the TC side of the mount, the bracket will try to twist the bottom rail of the frame outward. Instead, I'd mount the bracket solidly to the TC and place a rubber biscuit between the bracket and on top of the bottom frame rail. Just a quibble - it might be ok the way it is.

    You can put the dana 18 internals into a dana 20 case. So it still is a dana 18.

    but you're saying a dana 20 case... the outside... so it'll physically "look" like a 20.... right?? 20's are not offset and 18's are...????

    I sit corrected.

    I found the markings "C18-15-24" on the case and according to Novak it is a Dana 20!

    This Jeep just keeps on getting stranger and stranger :)

    Nope those thimbles are on all late dana 18 cases, my 71 still has the original case, it has those thimbles, the large hole 18 I rebuilt for Coby had them and so does the one I rebuilt for Firefighter mike, it seems to me that all the dana 18 cases after about 1968 had them. Thats been my experience.

    My experience has been the same as Mcruff's, all of the large hole 18s that I have seen have the double thimbles. The large hole 18 was used behind the T14 and T86 transmissions behind the V6. The Dana 18 and 20 can use the same case, with different gears and outputs.
