Back in the mid 70's I built a rear gas tank for Shaggy. I didn't like the ones available at the time so I built this one from 12 gauge steel to withstand impact and rusting. I wanted the largest tank I could stuff in so I made it 22" wide by 17" long by 12" high. There is a vertical baffle inside, running fore and aft, to minimize sloshing when going around a corner. The back 3" rises up at a 45* angle. This was to let it slide down over an obstruction more easily. The bottom of the tank is at the level of the rear axle housing to prevent impact on the lower front while driving forward. The total volume is 19 gallons, but a normal fill is 17 or 18 gallons. The tank has 4 angle clips welded to it by which it bolts to the bottom of the frame. Since I now have the body off the tub, I improved the mounting system. With only about 1/2" clearance between the tank and frame, it was a bear to get the nuts inside the frame c channel and tighten them down. The improvement I just made was to spot weld 4 cage nuts (like the ones on the front fenders where they bolt to the grille) inside the frame c channel. This way, I could just run the bolts up through the clips and frame and not have to hold the nuts. The first pic shows the front of the tank mounted to the crossmember. The second pic is a closeup of the 3/8"-16 cage nut assy. The third pic shows how the bottom rear of the tank slopes upward to minimize contact when coming down off a big rock.

wow, that is a big tank. How much gas does it hold? I like the filler neck on the driver side also! Very nice looking tank.
