Hey there folks! I have a 1953 M38A1 that I'm fixing up to be a occasional driver here in my small town. I just bought a Warn Overdrive unit for it from an elderly gentleman who is parting out his old 1957 CJ-5. Have you already guessed my problem?

The OD unit out of the CJ-5 has 29 teeth on the drive gear and my M38A1 needed the 26 tooth unit. I've called around and the best I can find will cost approx. $400.00 to switch gears (gear and labor) from Herm the Overdrive guy.

Does anyone know of a place that may be willing to trade OD units?

Has anyone used Herm and how was the experience? If I have him rebuild/replace the gear, I'll have almost the same cost as buying a new unit. Should I just sell mine on Ebay and buy new?

Any help or advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

    Welcome!

1rst off, Herm is a first class guy. See the buyer comments section for comments on dealing with him.

2cnd, if the OD is in good shape you could swap stuff around I guess. I'd be inclined to locate the right OD first and then sell the other one I think for what I've seen 'em go for on E-bay you should cover your costs. Whichever is easier, you'd stand a chance to break even or better buying/selling rather than retrofitting.

I had a similiar issue. I got a different geared T-case and swapped it out. Total cost was about 50$. Thats about the same price Herm quoted me for the barrel gear and swapping them out though if it makes you feel any better.

    Easiest option so far IMO.

With all of my rigs - I have an OD for each, but my spare tcases are a question as to which would be ready to pop in. I bought a bowel gear and Herm pressed the bearings on for me so I can swap out whatever is available. Other than the bowel gear, all the ODs are the same (of the same brand), all of mine are Warn.
