Good morning all. Yesterday turned out nothing like I planned. Didn't get to the garage until about 2 pm and it was hot. Got the front end out from under the 74, and was working on the 77. Noticed the front diff. is leaking around the yoke. :( My wife calls and wants me to work on her car. :( :( I have to go home jump it off and drive it back to the garage. Let it run for 45 minutes and killed it. It didn't crank again. Changed the starter solenoid. Changed the oil. Put in a parking light housing. The solenoid made me feel real stupid after a while. Didn't get any further on the cj's. AAAHHHH.

Hope it works out for you lynn. Nice to heart you have a little jeeper in training. I have two of them 3 & 6 and they do the same in mine. Honk horn, turn the wheel, and get into the greese, their mother loves that part.

Installed new cap and rotor. It started, stumbled, died, and wouldn't re-start, then I flooded it. I was mad so I just walked away.
    I'll try again this evening.

I think you did the right think by walking away it’s best to troubleshoot when your not upset.

I’m sure you have the wires on correctly after changing the cap, but it doesn’t hurt to double check.

Just a thought, but are you sure there's no trash in the fuel tank? Once I had a similar problem. The pick up tube was picking up a piece of trash and shutting off fuel. When you reduced to idle the trash would fall back into the tank.

Well, actually in my case it really wasn't trash. The tank had some sort of liner in it. Kinda like a spray on liner. It had delaminated from the tank, but still as I pressed the accellerator pedal the suction would pull it up onto the pick up tube and seal it off and the engine would die. Let off the gas the suction was reduced so the liner would go back down unblocking the pick up tube.

I was thinking the same. A guy I ride with had the same problem and it was from garbage in the fuel tank.

Tank is clean, installed new during the tub swap in 96.
    Wires... maybe... I'll double check.

Todays thoughts are again going back to the Pertronix unit. Maybe I goofed up the ring when I installed the new rotor. Or bumped the sensor... it DID start, then just shut down before I got the choke adjusted. Maybe I need a new pertronix sensor after all... I'll have to check the spark to the plugs one more time...

Sparky, seems like Dauntless pain is as widespread as the heat...
    ( predicted temps 99 today, 100+ tomorrow  )

Update: It started then died again last night. Tried again 10 minutes later, didn't put my foot on the gas... it started right up, idled great, perfectly smooth. I idled it to the bottom of the driveway, left it idle for 10 minutes. It didn't miss at all. I jumped in, fed some gas, it coughed and sputtered, almost quit... I managed to get the rpms up, and back the thing up the driveway and into the garage again.\
    This tells me:
OK, it's not the Pertronix or the ignition system. It idles perfectly.
Noting that, the idle circuit in a carb is completely separate from the main... and my problems occur when I'm off-idle or running under load.

Next up (when I get some time... ) Rebuilding the 2G. Maybe get to start that the last week in August, too busy between now and then.

Lynn, I had that same problem with mine a few years back. The clip that holds the accelorator pump rod vibrated off and the rod disconnected. Drove me crazy for a couple of days until I took off the air filter and saw the rod hanging there

Good thought Ralph, but the accel pump is working OK. I just installed a new one a week or so ago.

I really think this is all a result of dirty/muddy water collected on top of the air cleaner housing and draining down the hold-down shaft, directly into the carb throat. What a design, a bowl on top of the housing to catch muddy water, with a drain hole that leads into the carb throat

Kinda like the way they designed that lip on the cowl of flatfenders that will channel rain water perfectly into the #4 plug hole....

Jeep did a lot of things right, but they sure did plenty of things wrong too!!! :D

Last night I bought some Sea Foam, was going to run some through the carb. Pulled off the air cleaner and spacer, choked it and cranked it. It started right up. I didn't touch the gas pedal, I just idled it down the driveway. Was going to let it warm up, then pour in the seafoam. Of course, it died after about 3 minutes of idling... restarted, died again then wouldn't restart.
I had to put the towbar on, pull the truck in front of the Jeep, and slowly back it up the driveway (smelling clutch in the truck! ) as far as I could before it started to go sideways. After then getting the two uncoupled, I used the starter motor to back it the rest of the way into the garage.
I did notice, after it had stopped running and I was looking down the throat making sure the accel pump was working... a pretty good fuel leak between the carb bottom and middle sections.
A rebuild is indeed in order... I'll just put the seafoam on the shelf :)
I should get some time next week to pull the carb. BroncoJohnny has a gallon can of carb cleaner with a dip basket... I'm going to borrow it to do the cleaning before installing the new components.

Sparky, what kit did you use to rebuild your's and Mike's 2Gs? Napa kit? Got a number?

I'll update again next week after I pull the carb.

Just the NAPA kit, they get the right one for you if you order one for a 225 in a '71 CJ-5. Don't know the PN.
