Well the 5 was had a high idle so I fiddled around with the adjustments on my solex carb.
I now have a battlefeild smokescreen generator that would rival any produced by the US Army.
I bought this truck with the carb already on it,anyone who bought one new have the original tuning adjustments from the solex directions?
My Neibours thank you in advance.R)

Hi. I just put a new Solex on my 65 and it was set perfect from the factory. First off, they recomend a fuel pressure regulator in line with a pressure setting of 1-3/4 to to 2 pounds. I've read on this forum others has had success without it, but I put one on mine as per directions and it purrs like a kitten. Here are the directions that came with it:

    (a) wait for the engine to warm up
    (b) Screw in slightly the slow running adjustment screw so as to let the engine run at 500 RPM
    (c) Unscrew the volume control screw until the engine begins to hunt. Then screw it in progressively until the hunting disappears and the engine idles smoothly.
    (d) If the engine speed has risen, then reset the slow speed adjustment screw the bring the engine back down to 500 RPM
    (e) This may cause a slight resumption in hunting. If so, gently screw the volume control screw in until the idling is perfect.

Thats it. All it says about idle adjustment. My preferred method is to use a vacuum gauge and adjust until max vaccuum is obtained.

I cannot even get the Engine to start with the Solex carb. I removed a semi functional carter YF and the engine ran. With the Solex, it does nothing. Any ideas?

Can you post a photo or two? And not so close up that we can't see the linkage.

I used to have a 52 willys truck with a carter, ran like pooh, replaced it with a solex and never looked at it again. Got rid of the uneven idle and the bog on acceleration. When I got the f-head for my 3b i ran out and bought another one for it, It ran like junk with the solex, and I ended up running the carter. ( works very well I might add)
Might be a quality control problem where they make the solex ( not tuned the same?), might be a difference in fuel pressure. Probably both carbs work equally well when set properly and in the same state of repair.

I disassembled the Solex out of total frustration and found a plastic plug that was preventing fuel from getting into the bowl. I have no idea why this plug was installed inside the carb, with no way to find it unless you disassemble it. Needless to say, as soon as I removed the plug and reassembled, it fired right up. On a side note, the original fuel pressure regulator is leaking fuel around the dial. I am guessing there is a seal or gasket on the inside that is leaking, but it is
waking fuel onto the exhaust manifold. There is potential for major disaster, so she's parked for now.
