I am new to this forum, and I want to replace the exhaust manifolds on my 1973 CJ5 that has a 304 AMC engine. Since I don't have to pass smog, I would like to have manifolds w/o the AIR or smog stuff on it. From reading previous threads, I'm not really interested in headers, trying to avoid heat and noise.

If the AIR system works now, I'd keep it till it fails. There's no performance penalty other than the very small parasitic load of the air pump.

Someday CA may require OEM smog equipment on all cars, regardless of age - apparently Pheonix does now. I'd keep 'em if they aren't broken.

I've heard that AMX exhaust manifolds don't have the air tube holes and will bolt up to the 304 on a CJ. Haven't tried it myself though.

If you have a working system now and are set on removing it, I'd put everything in a box and save it. Phoenix sounds just like NJ in terms of smog equipment, unless you register as historic, and as Tim said earlier, CA might change the rules in the future.

Before I installed the air pump on my 304, there'd be a backfire upon deceleration, which went away once I put all the air equipment on. Backfiring will also happen with a bad diverter valve. Just an fyi...

If you remove the air pump, and it turns, dunk it in kerosene or light oil before storing it. I know they will keep ok if completely immersed, but they may be ok if you dunk them for a while and seal in a plastic bag. If you do nothing, it will freeze up eventually.
