Tim just said it was a Buick Nailhead pattern that later after AMC took over became an AMC pattern?

I know it'll bolt up to a 225 BOP pattern. Hence the reason for the question in the first place. Why wasn't that done to begin with?

might make sense if that only applied to V6 Jeepster
except for the fact that early AMC V8s (304,360) in Jeeps used the adapter ring up thru 73
    gotta be another reason here

for technical accuracy, besides the V6,
I show the engine adapter ring to be used on all AMC engines 232 258 304 327 360, 1973 and prior.
my info is the parts book

Found a clear pic of the bellhousing in the FSM.

I inverted it so it doesn't appear upside down.

Only thing I can tell is that it's not a BOP pattern. ;) Does more closely resemble the bellhousing on my 198?

    Sorry, no mystery.

That's a NAILHEAD pattern. Search the net and you should be able to find a pic of a NAILHEAD V8 with the back end showing.

There were 4 different adapter rings.
    1) AMC 327
    2) pre-71 232 (not the later AMC 232 - similar but not identical engine)
    3) BOP pattern, 225 and 350
    4) AMC 232, 258, 304, 360, 401

There was a changeover to an AMC-pattern case ca 1973.

My 68 CJ5 has 225+TH400 (BOP pattern) bolted directly to the 225 and a Dana 20 Tcase. I have no idea if they did this at the factory in 68 or if someone put this together later. I'd be happy to answer any questions about my setup if I can.

Hi Josh - the BOP case (from a Buick, Pontiac etc) is equivalent to the NAILHEAD case with the BOP adapter. There's no functional difference, and you wouldn't know the difference unless you looked carefully at the transmission.

I presume you do have the 1-piece BOP case, and I'm sure it did not come that way from the Jeep factory. You can sub the 1-piece transmission for the OEM setup by using the tailshaft and adapter from the OEM transmission in a 2WD BOP TH400... these cars are old enough that such things could easily have happened over their lives.

Another thing to remember is that CJ's back then didn't have the auto as an option.
