Can anyone tell me how much the steel cost you to make your own bumpers??? Just an estimate.

I would like to build a rear bumper out of 2X4 3/16 steel and have a spare tire mount on it. I would also do a matching front. I have a retired uncle who would do all the welding and I would try and help with the fab work.

I'm just trying to get an idea of how much a couple of 4 to 5 foot chunks of this stuff would run.

    Thanks

Well I just picked up a piece of fabricated C-channel for firefighter mike's rear end for $20. They made it of 10 gage material 53" long. He didn't want a true rear bumper but something similar to the original but of heavier material.

a 21 foot "stick" of 2x4 3/16 was running about $110 here. i would say go look in the scrap pile at the local steel shop and see what they have for drops. they will give you a better deal usually on those. Interesting stuff you can f find there

X2 on this. I know if I was in the market for what you are talking about it would only cost me whatever bolts I used. If you get in good with whoever runs the steel place, the steel wont cost you anything. A good bit of machine shops charge their customers for a full length even if they only get a cut piece. Then a lot of the places will put the rest of the piece in the scrap bin to be sold to the scrap metal place, since the whole piece has already been paid for. At least the place I deal with does this and I have seen pieces in there over 14' long. Since it is already paid for, he lets me dig through there from time to time and get what I want.

I just bought enough 3x5x3/16 steel for both front and rear bumpers along with enough angle and flat stock to mount both bumpers and build a mount for a winch. the price was less that 50 bucks.

Thanks for the replies. My retired uncle helps out at a welding shop back home so hopefully he can score me some steel.

    Thanks
