OK, what will happen if you mixed the bearing caps on an axle?

I am getting a differnt axle to run in the jeep and quite possibly the caps have been swapped, as i am not sure if th caps are on the axle or off, because it was sent to a shop in pieces and i am not sure how i will get it back. The jeep is not a daily driver so if i lose a bit of life in th e bearings it wont kill me. Is there a way from the factory to tell which cap goes where?

the caps have a marker cast in them. I used a letter/numberpunch set and labeled them L and R when I rebuilt mine last fall.

Hopefully it was disassembled by someone who knew to mark the bearing caps. There are eight ways to get them wrong and only one way to get them right. If you don't get a real answer here, I'd check with a driveline shop. There is probably a way to tell which way goes up, but I don't know how you would know right from left. Good luck, Dan.

fortunately i have the other axle here that the diff was never messed with. so i see the "dana" markings on it, so i will align them like the markings. but still curious what will happen if it is put on wrong.

    [wipes sweat off brow]

I got the housing and axles, and the caps are indeed marked and i have them in correctly. So that makes me feel much better :)
