gas lines

There are two lines coming off the gas tank on my '71 that end about 2" after they start. I figure they must be some kind of vent lines since the Jeep runs fine without them. I plan on going wheeling with this thing in July and I need to figure out where the lines are supposed to run so I can keep mud/water/etc out of my tank.

The lines come out on the driver's side of the tank. Any ideas on where the lines are supposed to run?

Sounds like you originally had a charcoal canister with the emissions equipment. The cannister is gone and someone plugged the lines.

Gee, I wonder who that "someone" could be. Actually a PO had cut those, and if not plugged, gas does flow out 'em on a hard left.

In the pic below, I believe he's talking about the "Vents go where?" lines:

For your wheeling trip, I'd suggest simply plugging them up if they aren't already. IIRC, one was already plugged up with a bolt in the rubber hose, and the other was plugged by dirt/crud/bees. That'll prevent water getting in there, case in point that day in May when we got stuck in that rut. I had 'em plugged and all was ok. The flip side to doing that is you'll have to remember to take off the gas cap once and awhile to vent air in or out...listen for that sucking sound, and put cap back on.

    Have fun!! :)

You should be able to get a vented cap - that will prevent pressure build-up in the tank.

That was my first thought too but I had trouble finding one that had the same inside "tab" diameter. Nothing I tried fit!

I guess plugging them will work. I'm looking for a more permanent/"correct" solution for the gas tank situation. I think I may switch to a fuel cell this winter. That would also help bring the gas tank up out of harm's way.

Thats also not a factory 71 model tank. The vent hoses on the 4 corners are missing. I guesss I assumed it was a factory style tank and not a replacement.
The tank is not in harms way, if you get it caught on something you have bigger problems!!:)
