OK, i got everything down on paper.

traielr is going to be 16 feet long.

For the outside frame, it will be 4x4 1/4 inch angle iron.

For crossmembers It will be 2x2 1/4 inch angle iron

Since the axle perches will be not to the end of the platform, i have to move them in a touch. So for the axle spring mounts I am going to use 5 inch C channel going from side to side of the platform like a crossmember (underneath) and i will mount the mounts onto them. this will give me an inch lift for the spring moutns and actually will help me not tear up the grass backing the trailer into my backyard since i have to go up a slope ;) For the toungue i will be using the 2x4 3/16 tubing i currently have on my trailer, i will jsut cut and reweld it. Since the steel is so new and sturdy i do not feel bad cannibalising it.

The 2x2 angle crossmembers i will be placed eevry 15 inches.

The deck will be made of wood. The last foot of the trailer i will make a steel lip.

So for now i can order the steel. Not sure of the cost, but a friend of mine gets a bit of a discount, and i may try to trade him a locker for the steel. As for ramps i am not sure what i will do, i am thinknig bout maknig a set that fold up and sit upright when in travel. It prevents me from losing them ;)

So what do you guys think? will it be sturdy enough?

Sounds good. Def. do the upright ramps on the trailer, that way you dont have to mess with them, just pull the pin or unhook a chain and your good to go :)

For about the same weight, I think I'd go with 2"x4" C-channel for the frame rails Dan. You get a lot more strength with the parallel top and bottom straps than you do with the angle iron this way.

Unless you have ready access to a lot of the 4x4 angle, I'd stick with the tried and true methods that the professional trailer builders use.

    Steve,
I saw alot of traielrs made with the 4x4 angle. I could do 2x4, but i wanted the angle to go up a bit on the sides so the wood planks would be protected by the steel :) Given right now the whole trailer project has come to a screaching halt. I am going to get a smaller amonut os steel and just fix my current trailer. Then the plans may be sell it and use that money and money from moving my mtoher in law and buy a larger trailer. :)
