I've searched all the related threads and cannot find how to remove my front hubs and Brake drums (9"). I've removed the locking hub and can see the large hex nut and bearings behind it but I cannot get an odd looking lock off in front (outside) of the hex nut. This thing looks like round washer. I think its threaded cause I can rotate it about 10 degrees. Its about 1/4" thick with 4 small holes about size of a bb, in one of those holes is a pin with a center hole just large enough for the point of an ice pick. I assume I need to remove this pin so I can screw the lock off and get to the hex nut but how do you get this thing off?

Ok before everyone piles on and questions my intelect, let me explain those reading glasses from Ace Hardware are not as good as I need given my aging eyes. With good glasses, I see that pin has a 1/16" allen set and if you screw it out you can remove the locking ring with expected ease. Now that's done you can remove the hex nut & the hub and drum (in one piece) come off easily. I see my brake shoes are in great shape to replace, evenly worn out but no drum damage and I can rebuild that leaky wheel cylinder. (Can't believe this thing is only 40 years old and already the front right wheel cylinder is leaking)

Seriously, I noticed a lot of disussion on other threads about the relative position of the drum and hub. Mine is a Govt issue 66 CJ5 (see it on featured jeeps) and while the drum is on the outside of the hub, the drum is firmly attached to the Hub. Getting the hub off was essential to gettng the drum off the Jeep. I'm gona leave it that way and make good notes on what I learned today.

Hope this helps someone whose eyes may be getting like mine.

I've run into those allen screws awhile back, when my eyes were better  Glad you figured it out before one of these young whippersnappers started making "old guy" jokes like they often do to me R)

Got any pics, for the benefit of those who may not have seen this set up?

Better still, glad you figured it out before somebody suggested just using a punch and turning them off...... That happened to Dad when the JEEP was still fairly new. He let a fella who had more time and some experience (he thought) work on it. Didn't turn out too well.

Lynn, I thought I had a decent pic of the layout, but first I had to get my glasses to see the pic file. Only one I have is just a heap of parts laying on the fender. Next time I have them out, I'll shoot a better pic.

What year jeeps had that type of front brake hubs? On my 64 the front and rear hubs and drums are tight and dont want to separate. I thought on CJ5's the hub stayed on the axle and just the drums came off for easier brake access. What's the deal? Which type should a stock 64 CJ5 have? Doug

The threaded ring with the teeny allen screws a re part of the Warn Lock-O-Matic hub sets that were very popular back in the day. The inside clearance was so tight that Warn had to include these rings as a replacement for the outer wheel bearing retainer nut.

Check those rings for cracks, especially around the threaded holes for the allen screws. There isn't much metal there, and the rings were proe to failure there. They are also no longer available from Warn, as the Lock-O-Matics have been discontinued for years. They are still GREAT hubs though, if you keep them maintained.

The really cool thing about the Lock-O-Matics is that you can keep them unlocked all the time to reduce drag, but if you throw the xfer case into 4WD the hubs will engage when you apply power to the front axle in a forward motion, like if you suddenly get stuck. It saves you from having to get out and lock in the hubs for short stints in 4WD. (Only works when going forward though!) ;)
