I am reassembling 66 CJ5 10" drum brakes. Two adjuster barrels are right-hand thread and two are left hand thread. Which ones go on which wheels? Also the adjuster cable/wire. Does it go to the front or rear shoe on each wheel? Any photos front left, front right, rear left, rear right would be helpful. Thanks.

You'll find they'll only fit one way with the backing plates so the adjusters can be reached. The slot is positioned such that if it's backwards you can't adjust it.

The FSM should have diagrams on how the cable runs too.

    HTH!

If you do get some good pics let Tigershark or willys59cj5 know and they can add them to the Brake Section Image Gallery as there are no 11" drum pics there that I saw.

I don't know about the 10" brakes (they are a different design), but with the Bendix brakes that have cable adjusters, if you put the adjusters on the wrong side, the adjusters will loosen when you pull on the cable. All the parts have to go together so that when you stop in reverse, the pawl climbs the toothed wheel. Then when the brakes are released, the toothed wheel turns and the adjuster tightens.

When Sparky says they can't be reached, that's assuming you have not removed the backing plates, and they are still on the correct side. If the adjuster is installed correctly, you can reach through the slot with a brake spoon or flat screwdriver and turn the star wheel. If they are on backwards, you can't.

I am resurrecting this thread from several months ago since I am searching the forum for some brake help. I have the 10 inch brakes like Gerrym at the top mentioned. I am trying to figure out why I don't have the cable/wire that is mentionted above that I am assuming is the Link Type Adjuster. Do all 10 inch brake assemblies have this? Maybe this is why I am having some problems...so I am exploring...thanks for your help!

You used to be able to buy conversion kits to convert to manual adjusters. I know they existed for the Bendix brakes, and they probably did for the 10" brakes at one time. If so, the adjusters are removed and there is a spring that goes across the top of the star wheel to keep it from backing off.

Tim: Thanks, I will post a pic when I get it pulled off later this week. Thank you for willingness to give me some feedback. After I am reading some more threads on this, I am realizing that I am not 100% confident that I put my adjuster back in the right way! I wish I had taken a picture but my hands were too dirty. After reading these threads I am realizing that this would prevent my brakes from self adjusting, so I need to check this as soon as I get in on it. Thanks for helping me think through it!
