Back on the tire carrier discussion. I am straying from my idea of dual swing out pieces and rather just use one hinge and have the whoel shebang swing out. I have heard that 1 inch spindles have been snapping with just an oversize tire on the back. I am going to have a tire, along with a cooler and two ammo cans on the back. And possibly a gas can alos on the top. This is going to add alot of leverage. I was looknig at the larger spindles say 1 1/4. I am trying to make everything as low as possible. I am not sure what the total weight will be but i am just trying to find a beefier spindle to use.

I have a small crane mounted to an E350 spindle on the back of my FC170. It is a tapered spindle that tapers from about 1-1/2" to 1". I picked up a fullsize 3/4 ton ford front axle with all the steering components and wheels & tires with the crane extended with no problems.
    Here are pics (without axle)

A 1-1/4" spindle should be plenty for a tire carrier.
