How much more trouble to put a NP435 in an intermediate than a T18? I Have the T150 now.

Having trouble finding the T18 without spending more $$$, but is it a wash when making the NP435 fit?

Ive searched some but was hoping for a link/reference or just an answer.

Thanks guys, youve always been a big help!

off the top of my head, adapters make a 435 too long for a CJ5. I put in a 79 T18a, which is the shortest truck 4 speed combo you'll find, and my rear driveshaft at rest is 16-1/8"

The adapter(s) will be expensive so add that in to the cost of the tranny. IIRC there is a short shaft kit now for the 435 so length is not as much of an issue.

hmmmm. so the 435 i've been running in mine for 3 years doesn't work? ;)

i used the novak kit. the kit includes a new mainshaft, which is shorter than the 435's original. the kit also includes the adapter to mate to the dana 20.

i'm not positive, but i believe that a dodge version, with 6.68:1 first ratio is out there, and has a pattern that matches the dana300. edit: to clarify, this would work well with a 318 motor. not sure if using the dodge version would work for the 258/304 etc.

Got one in my '72 CJ6. Love the transmission, its a huge impovement over the T150. I used the Novak kit with no install problems that I didn't create myself. I went with the NP435 because it had a lower 2nd gear which I figured would be what I was starting off in most of the time. I'm extremely happy with the way it drives.....

    But...

It hangs down a lot. With a CJ5 it might not be as much of a problem, but if I had to do it over again, I would go with a T-18 just because it tucks up between the frame rails much better than an NP435. With a CJ6 2.5" lift and 33" tires, it hits everything on the trail. I have actually seen rocks sneaking in from the side of the trail so that they can get hit by my NP435.
