Ford Shock Mounts

Hi there. I haven't post in a while and was thinking if anyone could give me pointers on my next project...it would be this group. I was looking at my front shock mounts the other day and noticed they are starting to self-destruct. It appears that my shocks are too short and are limiting the travel. As a result my front shock mounts are being pulled downwards. I am going to try replacing them with Ford shock mounts so I can use a long shocks up front. Has anyone tried using these? Here is a writeup I found on a CJ7.

I got a set of these the other day from our friendly ford dealer and hope to get started on the project this weekend. Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks

I've seen it done on a few other boards and it looks to work great. It might be in the making on my jeep to keep us posted and post pics.

I just installed a set on my CJ7 I'm building. Turned out nice. I sleeved the bolt holes through the frame and ran bolts all the way through. They are so long, they create a lot of leverage. If they move too much, I may have to add a brace of some kind to the back of the mount. I'll probably put a set on the CJ5 in the near future.

May be a dumb quesion but wouldn't it be easiest to just weld them on?

    nickmil In mothballs.

I've also used them on a couple of projects for other people. They work great and can trim them down easily if needed. Plus pretty inexpensive. Nickmil

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

wouldn't it be easier to just get the right length shocks ?

The point is you can only make a short shock travel so much. By putting on longer mounts and longer shocks they no longer become a limiting factor on a supple suspension. But you knew that already. :) Nickmil

likewise, there is only so much travel in the spring assy
    and...but you knew that already:D

The problem I had was the shocks were the limiting factor. I could put on longer shocks but that wouldn't correct the way my shock mounts look. Unless maybe I used something too long causing them bend back upwards. I thought this might be the easiest way to correct both problems plus they were cheep. I thought I would test fit first with bolts and then weld them once I know everything works.

Yup, these are very easy and cheap to do. Just clamp it on and weld away. I'd add some gussets on the back. Mine wound up needing a crossover brace on top also, but the ones on my yota have been doing fine without. I bought a pair of these 4yrs ago for $17. Just can't beat it!R)

However I keep hearing that ford discontinued that part. Don't know how true that is though.

I pick mine up on Tuesday so I guess they are still making them. Got mine for $14.

Do you know the Ford part #? I need new front shocks and I might try the Ford mounts.

    Thanks!

    PART #E5TZ 18183A

I got the old ones off the other night. Now if it would just stop raining I could get on the new. The only concern I have is with clearance. It doesn't look like there is enough room for the whole mount. I might need to cut it down some. I am going to create my own Red Neck RTI ramp with some cribbing and a piece of channel I have old back to check for clearance. Here are a couple of pics to date.

And you can only make a longer shock compress so much. Plus if you use a longer mount obviously the longer shock is already stretched further to begin with. Long story shortened there is obviously a happy medium to be gained by a combination of both. But we all knew that. ;) :D

Cool, I was cleaning the garage yesterday and was looking a the 3b wondering how I was going to do the shocks with the spring over. Printed and filed!

I know they are cheap already but if your stop by a 4 wheel parts wholesalers or equivalent then chances are they have them in the trash as take offs from some some monster Ford with too many shocks that will never see the dirt!
