Is there any problems with replacing just the chain?? And since just a chain is $45 and a whole set is $123 from Krage. The gears looked fine but the chain is slap wore out...at least I think it is, heres a pic.

I've always replaced them as a set.
But I'm not an expert. ;)

Dosnt suprise me at all. There were some intersting home made mods done to it. Notice the cam retainer/button in the pic, well the end of it is just a threaded brass fitting....pretty sure thats not original

I wouldn't replace a chain on my bicycle without replacing the sprockets.

Is your casting number 638632 on the bottom right side of the block unless a prewar or GPW, Ford WWll, engine.
See what the serial number is. Look on the water pump boss or top front right side of the block just below the head. There is an oval there and it may have a serial number. The oilfilter and bracket are in the way but the oval is there.

Crank gears often hold up well on most engines. Chains stretch of course. Alot to consider on an old engine though... steel technology is different that 60 years ago. It prolly is worn.

In a suprise move by me recently, I elected to buy a GM OEM chain, new crank gear, and nylon coated cam gear for my 231. Through alot of research, I found that many guys are racing with the stocker GM setup! My real reason was for the quiet chain so the knock sensor doesn't pick up the noise. It is a big split opinion discussion piece on the Buick Turbo websites. Like what oil to run in your old Jeep on this site :D

If it's easy enough to get to (heck, you can pull the whole engine within a few hours), you have $45 now but not $123, and you think you'll have $123 in the future... I'd just replace the chain for now. If something happens later, replace more when you have more money.

Sure, doing it as a set is probably the *right* thing, but if you don't have the money, I'd put on the chain alone rather than letting is sit for weeks until you can gather the money. Considering what few miles it gets, I bet it would last quite a while...

    Just my .02.
