There I was, minding my own bizniz and going to pick up #1 son from school. It was a gorgeous day here in da 'Burgh so I had the Jeep out. I'm climbing a slight grade in 3rd gear when I feel an odd vibration, sort of like having 1 dead cylinder.

Pull over to the side of the street, turn the wheels to the curb and set the e-brake. Pop the hood, and take a looksee. Engine purring like a kitten.
Hmmm. Slide underneath and what do I see? Two sheared-off bolts on the rear driveshaft, and the other two are less than finger-tight.

    Grrr.

Tightened the remaining two bolts as best I could with my trusty (and rusty) crescent wrench from the toolbox, and engage the 4WD to limp it home. Made it with no issues. A trip to the hardware store and I'm all set with 4 new grade-8 bolts and washers/nuts.

Guess what I'm goin gto be doing tomorrow night after a looong day teaching at the county fire academy?

I hate it when stuff like that interfers with an otherwise perfectly good drive:(

Yea but just think, a bad day in a Jeep beats a good day at work. ;)

Next time, you could "borrow" a bolt/nut from the other driveshaft, and have three on each. Or you could borrow a couple from somewhere else on the Jeep, maybe. I've rode Harleys and drove Chevys for years, used to that sort of thing. I've even scored hardware from road signs and parked highway equipment. Sometimes you can get steel wire, like baling wire, from a nearby fence.

At least with a jeep, you can even take out one driveshaft and drive on the other (front?) shaft. I've had to do that before. No problem.

But it would be very unfunny if one end of a shaft came loose at speed - lucky you were paying attention.
