Broken D18 case

Just got my D18 back that I bought from neptco19 and had sent to Herm for rebuilding. When I unpacked it I discovered that the neandethals @ DHL had managed to break off the lowermost passengers side mounting eye where it bolts to the transmission.

I do NOT want to have to go through all the heartache and sorrow of a damaged package claim if I don't have to. Am I going to be able to use this tcase as is, or am I totally SOL?

Will get a pic when I get home in the morning.

Don, this is for your '7? JMO - I think you should file your claim. Have you contacted DHL or Herm yet? Herm might have some good advice or suggestions.

File the claim as soon as possible. Take pictures, especially of any damamged packaging to show where DHL did the deed. Documment everything.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

I would not use it....that's just me..no point in installing something that's busted in my opinion

    file the claim;)

Everything looked all hunky dory at first:

Then I turned it over and discovered this:

I would *think* that it could still be used, since 4 out of 5 bolts are still able to hold it to the adapter. But you guys are the experts and I'm not, so that's why I'm asking.

Personally I'd file the claim, but if you don't want to pursue it structurally you'll be able to use it as is. Scout Dana 300's with the same bolt pattern don't even have the bottom mounting hole or flange area. They only use 4 out of the 5 holes normally found in the "Texas" pattern and have no issues. Nickmil

Edit: another thought, what about drilling another hole in the t-case and drilling and tapping another hole in the transmission? We used to have to do that to every one that went behind a Ford Toploader 3 or 4 speed. Nickmil

a REALLY GOOD machine shop could replace that ear. I had a starter flange/ear replced on a chevy 350 block that was just rebuilt. It did cost around $250. I would say DHL owes you at least that. This was an old timer machine shop that has since been bought out.

what kind of work did you have done to it? i might have another d18 case around if itll help.
you could clean it up, paint it and xfer everything from the new on onto this one.
just a thought. if you decide to use it, let me know if you have a large hole or small one. i will see what i have.

man that stinks, file a claim. DHL has plenty of money. they are the biggest world-wide shipping service. besides, you didn't spend your money on something broke, but that's what you got. is the hunk that broke off in the box? box destroyed?

I broke one of the ears off on my t-case the first time I took it out, I think it was already cracked and when it touched the garage floor it just fell off.

I ran it for about 3 years with no problems. When I took it back out for the twin stick job I had the piece brazed back on. One of our retired sheet metal mechanics did it for me here at the shop. No troubles after one year.

I ran Tonka for a few years with almost the exact same crack, mine was actually worse 'cause it was the whole "ear" cracked, not just at the bolt hole. This is what happens when you try to hard to bolt things togeather & the little tab that holds the tranny reverse idler shaft gear in place isn't In Place :(.

Because mine was cracked further up than yours there was an oil leak but no other problems other than that.

I would file the claim and also ask this very question to Herm. If he recommends replacing the case, then do it.

If you have the rest of it, I would weld it back on.

Just for my own future reference how was it packed? Did you send it in an old ice chest as a packing crate?

The broken part was in two little pieces in the bottom of the box. If I can use it as she sits, I'm gonna do it. I just don't want to sit on some 1-800 number pressing one for this and two for that, only to have them declare "improper packaging" (that's UPSs battle cry anyways).

    neptco19 That guy....

I would check with Herm and see what he recomemnds. But it cant hurt to at least give the claim a shot. I've never dealt with DHL's customer service but its gotta be better than UPS or FedEx... Was the box pretty messed up when you recieved it??

Box looked OK on the outside!

Talked to Herm earlier and I emailed him some pictures. He's having DHL come to pick it up and he's gonna get me another one ASAP. Sez everything is insured to the max when it leaves his place, and he uses DHL because they're *usually* more gentle on goods.

    No argument here! :)

Took delivery of my replacement today. Judging by outward appearance, this is actually a better unit than the one I started off with! Herm handled 85% of the damaged package claim business. Top notch service! 8) I wish a few of the bigger vendors would go take some lessons from this guy.
