Needs some expert imfo, I need to replace the lug nuts on one wheel. I have removed the hub from the drum, 10". Accorrding to the book I'm suppose to attach the drum and hub then drive the new lugnuts through both, then place a piece of round stock in vise, place head of new lug nut on top of round stock, then Swage the bolt into the countersunk seation of the hub with a punch ?? It says something about should have .030 of runout from the drum face, I'm lost on this, whats "runout"? Also while removing the drum and hub the face of the drum was bent a little, I have straighten with hammer and seems ok, will I have any problems with this. Thanks for any help, what a wounderfull web site. Doug

"Run-out" is the amount the inside of the drum varies from being true, compared to a perfect circle. Or that the mounting surface is "off" from being flat and in-line with the drum, as it turns. Checked by spinning it while using a dial indicator.

If it was bent and hammered back, your braking will be adversely affected. Even a few thousandths egg-shaped and you should get the drums resurfaced on a brake lathe. Cheap enough to do, and helps get the best stopping power.

"Swaging" more or less means mashing the metal until it pinches the stud in place.

Pete, Thanks a bunch, I understand, I think. By using a brake lathe , that would be same as having the drums turned? I'll look into the dial indicator, have no ideal what that is. Once again thanks for helping a non- mechanic, if this jeep had an electric cord I could fix it ..

I thought runout was the number of times you had to "run out" get and more beer, tooling, etc while working on jeeps!? LOL

Yes, I would just get all four drums turned; it's quick and cheap, and good for the best braking in the long run.

No need for you to own a dial indicator for this. (It's a precision measuring tool.) Just let the machine shop handle things.

While you are there have them swage the new studs, too.

    Good luck.
