Kaiser was bought by AMC in late 69 early 70. most of the early 70 CJs still had Kaiser number plates on them. so you are definately driving an AMC product. you should be able to pick up quite a bit of info about it in a short time, if you have specific questions please post them and you will be impressed with how fast the info flows around here.

a good way to start is to look at the list of questions posted earlier in this thread and start down it, these are about the different changes that occured over the early CJ years.

i just bought a early cj5. i dont have a title and no id plate anywhere. is there anyway to tell what the vin would be from the engine code or the numbers on the frame?

my 66 cj6#is 8422a10273 does that mean it is the 273 tux park

New member and first post. Name is Clint and I am outside Charlotte NC.
I just aquired a 70 CJ5 from a member. I don;t have the title yet but the VIN is
8305017 355816. I don;t know anything else like the build date but maybe this will help some.
My v6 engine casting is 991503

My cj-5 renegade was built Sept 1970 vin# 8305017-367426. It's titled as a 71.

My VIN # 8305 A 200844. The wipers are top mounted.

blazer: yup it's a tux... congrats (I have no idea what a 273 is)

cdeal28078: yours is a mid to late 69, hard to tell because they didn't start putting the build date stickers on til later.

rossbos: your CJ is titled correctly, the 71 model year began on sept 1.

Johnny66: your serial shows an early December 65 build date, correct for a 66 model year.

8305c17351600, 1969, only thing original left is the :v6: and the D27 all the rest pirated or bought new. I know its a canadian, that's about it.

Where did the document go? When I click on the link on the first page I get an error.

I might have a problem. I just lifted the dash sticker for resto and it looks like my build date says JUL 1970. VIN is 8305017 365339. I would like to double check where my VIN is at in the numbers before I order the new stickers. Thanks.

Clint, your serial should be Jun, at least by the portion of the list I have.

I'm working with Sparky to get a copy to him to host. My ISP lost their personal web space disc I was on and they didn't have backups and won't re-enable the space until they get the data back.

OK... I think it's back up and on the earlycj5.com server now!

A few changes were added to help people decode earlier VINs with fewer digits. I haven't taken the time to see when the various changes occured to VIN lengths, but I think the changes should help people with earlier shorter VINs. If anyone sees any mistakes or has any comments, please pass them along so we can continue to improve the document.

I am without the dash decal and was trying to determine the build date. I was able to see the document (thanks for creating it btw). My vin is 365697 which shows a build of June/July 1970 and my title says 1971. Any thoughts?

Have posted my serial number before, but does not seem to be on the pdf document, so here it is again.

Serial Number: 8305 017 373400
Registered as a 1971.
No tailgate.
I believe it to be a Renegade II
Original color baja yellow
rear mounted gas tank
Oil and Ammeter gauges
Buick V6 engine

Previous owner said it looked just like the yellow jeep under "1971 Renegade II Package Options" before he painted it.

through the process of research and gathering, we found alot of jeeps were titled later than their build dates. this is mostly due to titling practices in some states back in the early 70s. most vehicles were titled by the date they were sold from the dealership. HTH
