Well i got the laquer thinner today to clean my paint gun with. It did work a bit better, but gosh is this epoxy primer some tuough stuff :( I got alot of it cleaned but it will goop up on the wire brish i am using to clean off th eparts and then after a while i am just smearing the globs of primer. So what is th ebest way to get this type of primer off? I saw there was xylene at th store. So i tried Mineral spirits, Laquer thiner and even some carb cleaner ;) Boy is it a mess. Fortunately now i just have to lay down the yellow paint for the front clip, but then i will have to use it again for the tub, and want to make it a bit easier on me during clean up time. Boy i dread cleanup time :(

The universal thinner/clean up for epoxies and polyeurathanes is MEK. Methyl Ethyl Ketone is pretty hot stuff and will clean everything out your spray rig real well. Remember to re-oil the trigger packings after clean up as the MEK will wash out the oil in the packing .

Epoxy primer doesn't cure as fast as regular primer is why it does that. Same as lacquer primer, looks hard but start sanding it and it gets gummy. Definitely aggravating. Be careful with MEK, that's some bad stuff.

I'm curious about what parts you're trying to clean up. I've had good luck just wetting a rag with lacquer thinner and it'll usually dissolve what ever I'm trying to clean off. Mainly the outside of the paint gun of course, but it's got several different colors on it. I gave up trying to totally clean it off.

    Say No to MEK.

Dan you should be able to run lacquer thinner through the gun after you use it and a quick wipe.........you didnt let it set?

The inside of the gun is fine. my problem is just cleaning out the glass measuring cup i am using to determine ounces, and cleaning teh hopper on the gun. I am cleaning the gun pretty good, and i always spray thinner out of it when everything is said and done and put a little in the hopper to sit when not in use. I am gumming the heck out of the brushes when cleaning the hopper and glass. I tried the rags but it gets gummy also.

You ought to buy the plastic containers that are marked in ounces.

Dan, I'm curious as to what store would sell you epoxy primer and not the appropriate thinner for it. They almost always pimp their own for best results and that really is the best approach. The reccommended thinner will probably be MEK or MAK will a mix of Toulene and Alcohol.
Lacquer thinner may get most of it out but what stays in the lines and gun screw up the equipment. Next time around it'll break off and clog up the fluid head just like trying to run dirty mat'l.
I boughT a 10 gal. mix, 5 epoxy and 5 catalyst for $10 from Sherwin Williams because the shelf life was almost up, when I painted my CJ5. It worked out real well and the Body Shop that loaned me space used the rest up on several different projects. Had to sand it before paint because scuffing pads didn't hardly scratch it.
Primer protects the substrate, finish protects the primer and does the cosmetics.

You may already know. For future reference, the disposable plastic liners for gravity feed paint guns make life a lot more tolerable when its clean up time. If thats the kinda gun you have.

No prob! I think Dan mentioned in another thread that he had a gun with the plastic hopper. I know how much of a pain those things are to get clean. The liner takes care of that problem. Most paint stores around here have them so I'm sure they would everywhere else.

I saw those liners, i have not measured or looked to see if they can be adapted to my current gun. since it is a cheapie harborfrieght model it probably wont fit. i would love to be able to use the bags, just not sure if i can.
