    Re: CJ-2A axle/diff upgrades?

    Hello,

Does anyone know a source to get parts to convert an offset Dana 44 to flanged/ full floater axles ? I've been looking for a kit for some time. I really want to ditch the tapered axles.

    Thanks

You need to buy the floater kit and a hub kit. For 71 and prior 19 spline axles the kit is 61757. For 69 to 71 30 spline axles the kit is 61756. The hub kit is 36655. If you want drive flanges instead of hubs the flange kit is 39340. Not a reccomendation but GOWARN.com is the cheapest I have found. $656.95 for the foundation kit and $101.95 for the hub kit.

Is warn still using the hubs with the set screw lock ????????? I hate them and wish I could get a set that use an index instead.

The hubs that came with my FF kit don't "click" or "index" into lock or unlock positions, you just turn them till the arrows are lined up then tighten a set screw that holds the dial in position. The dial gets ****ed when you tighten the screw. You have to dig out an allen wrench every time you want to change positions.

I am now in the middle of installing a full floater in my D44. I choice the 30 spline kit because I wanted to upgrade to a locker. I also want to put on disc brakes. If you have any question just ask.

OK, here goes, "do the hubs have a set screw to lock them in position ??"

Yes there is a set scew to lock them into postion so they cannot be turned without loosening the set screw. I have never had a hub slip out of the lock postion but sense these are on the rear drive wheels they must have thougth it necessary. That would also go for towing. Would not want someone playing with the hubs.

The early Warn FF kits did not have a set screw in the hubs. They were put in because people found jokesters liked to unlock the hubs on them while sitting in parking lots, etc. If your hubs don't "index" meaning they don't snap into the lock or free positions then the hubs are damaged. I'm not saying this is what happened, just an alert, but you have to be very careful about how tight the set screw gets tightened. It should be tightened until it just touches. The instructions are very explicit in this. Reason is if you overtighten the set screw the end of the screw pushes against the lock plate inside and bends it. This make the hubs inoperable. The front hubs and the ff hubs are different. The ff hubs have a shallower body as well as some other changes. Nickmil

    nickmil,

Mine have never indexed since new. They operate fine other than that damn set screw. My jeep is never where it will get fooled with and I would prefer hubs without the set screw. Do you know if they are available ??

Warn service line 1-888-722-6730 maybe they can answer if the front hubs will fit the rear.

The hubs are definitely different front and rear BUT I'm pretty sure you can replace just the cap and dial assembly with one from a front set. I'm sure they are the same. I'd definitely call Warn and tell them of your problem. They should be willing to warranty them and replace them with ones that don't have the set screw. Nickmil
