I just recently had the linkage connecting the clutch to my pedal break. As I was re-attatching the cable to the fork leading into the transmission the fork got pushed in. I was told just to pull the fork back out with a pair of vice grips and that everything should just slide back into place. Once I had everything put back together and the fork pulled back out, I started to have problems.

When I put it into gear and try to get going, it acts as if it's still in neutral. (I don't go anywhere.) I still have to push in the clutch to shift the jeep into either 1st or neutral otherwise it will grind. This leads me to believe that the transmission must be spinning in there.

    (It's a 1968 CJ5 with a T-18 transmission in it.) Might be useful.

I assume it is a V6, Make sure the fork is attached to the throw-out bearing properly, I don't have a picture of how it should be but a FSM would help. Usually the fork not doing the right thing would act as if the clutch wasn't engaging (start Jeep in neutral, push clutch in and try to put in gear if it grinds at all clutch not working, or misadjusted). It seems to me that if everything worked before the cable busted it's just the fork misaligned to the throw-out bering. Also what preceded the cable brake, any situation that might of contributed to transmission failure? You know catching a little air, pulling a buddy out of a ditch! Oh! welcome Northern Michigan! Please introduce yourself on the introduction page.

I'm assuming I am going to have to drop the transmission? Yes it is a V6. And no the transfercase isn't in neutral.

You shouldn't have to drop the tranny to repair or replace the fork. It is tight, tedious work but should be straight forward.

You just need to verify that it is in the throw out groove and on the pivot ball.

OK so now I was pushing the jeep and all of a sudden it went... Click Click Click Click and then it caught into gear. I tried to drive it but then it just pretended like it was in nuetral again. What the heck? Then I pushed in the clutch and it got stuck and wont come out! Now what?

X2. I am pretty sure your fork is not on the throw out bearing properly. Not 100% about it but it could cause just about all of the problems you are having. Should be able to get to it without dropping the trans but it will be tight. You may want to unbolt the trans and slide everything back, but not completely out, to give you more room. Just my .02

I'm not going to venture a guess on your problem, but I will say this - you can remove and reinstall the clutch fork without removing the transmission. As long as you still have the original bellhousing. The opening for the fork is especially large. If you get yourself a mirror and a flash light, you can see in there pretty good.

I agree with Tim. Look in there and see what the fork is doing. Its alot easier to find out what it is first than tear everything apart. Might be something simple;)

    Allllll Fixed!

Well, it turns out that the main shaft gear in the transfer case managed to slip right of the main shaft!!! I was told that this is, surprisingly, a common problem among these CJ's. Thanks for all your ideas!R) R) R)
