    I've got a 75 cj-5, 304/T-15

Here's the question... is there a 4 or 5 speed tranny that has the same dimensions, bolt pattern, and spline count as the T-15? If so, what tranny is it and what are some vehicles it came in?

In the near future, I'd love to take a junkyard trip an find something I can transplant after getting it freshened up (or buying one that has already been freshened up).

Please remember that I will actually USE your answers to put even more money into this bottomless pit of a Jeep :)

In a word, no, not that I know of. Pretty much any transmission that might be more desirable than your T-15 requires some adapting. What's wrong with the T-15?

I'd like an easier gear for the highway. It's not worth dealing with changing drive shafts or spendng 450 with advance adapters, though.

Besides, when I install cruise, won't care too mych, will I?

    Thanks!

Well, every 4-speed out there, save one, has the same 1:1 top gear as the T-15. Strong 5-speeds will be too long for the chassis. The one overdrive 4-speed is the SROD Ford top loader http://www.5speeds.com/toploader.html R&P in Oregon sells an adapter, but you'll need to buy that, find the unusual transmission, change your driveshaft lengths (probably), and probably other issues. Don't know if the SROD will take a top shifter, maybe only a side shifter.

I used to own a '73 with a 304/T-15 and 4.27 axles, and it was fine on the highway. I replaced the suspended accelerator pedal with a floor mounted pedal from a Wagoneer, which was more comfortable. Other than that, I could drive as fast as I dare, probably faster.

I think the answer for me will be re-gearing. 4.27 gears ::drool::

    Tim,
Just for info purposes there is a version of the SROD that came factory with a top shifter. It came in one or two years of full size Bronco's only. R&P has one adapted right now to an 18/20 transfer case rebuilt. Not cheap though. Most, like you noted have the side shift. I'd have to measure one out for sure but seeing them on the shelf I believe the length should be fairly close to that of the T-15. They have around a 3.25-1 first gear IIRC. Nickmil
