I switched from 9 to 11" brakes on my 60 4wd utility wagon from an after markrt kit and now find that the threaded length on the stock spindles is not long enough to allow the installation of both lock washers and nuts . I was told that I should have switched out the spindles from a 76 CJ5 as they are longer. Is this correct? Rich Seekonk MA

    yep, it's got flatfenders :)

so you are using the stock spindles, correct ?
what about the wheel hubs and bearings ?
the bigger backing plate wouldn't have chnaged anything
it must be with the wheel bearings and hub
hub/bearings not seated on the spindle all the way ?
wheel seal ID too small ?

Whoever is telling you that is feeding a line of bull. The '76 spindles are the same length dimensions as your existing ones from the mounting flange out. Like Jim said, ck bearings, races, make sure races are seated correctly in the hub, etc. It's also possible you have an early hub that uses th narrow inner race and bearing. If you put the later, wider bearing and race in it will offset everything towards the outer end of the spindle and you will have the problem you describe as the hub is machined with a different inner offset to compensate for the smaller width bearing. I'd look into that as a possibility also. Who did you buy the brake conversion from? They should be able to help you out also. If you have any more questions though, don't hesitate to ask here as these are a great bunch of folks! Nickmil.

If the inner race turns out to be the culprit, please post back and let us know. Also, I'd like to have the part numbers for both sets on inner races/bearings for an update to my disc brake tech article.
