I have just purchased a '71 V6 CJ6. It's the CJ6 featured in JP magazine tech articles for seveal issues.

A prior owner installed outside the frame exhaust and headers. The system is far too noisy. I want to go to a stock system. I have purchased a passenger side manifold and need the driver side. Oh, the Jeep has the Saginaw set-up and hydraulic clutch.

I need to know how the stock system was routed past the transmission/transfer case and how one side connects to the other to make a single system. I do not know of a v6 in my area to have a look. There does not seem to be much room to route the passenger side pipe through the opening by the t-case and above the cross member.

Some suggestions and possibly a pic or two would be appreciated

    Thanks for your help.

Hi John - welcome to the site!

My drivetrain is different than yours, but you might still get some ideas from the pictures:

IMHO - just take it to a good exhaust shop and tell them what you're after -- quiet with the exhaust exit at the rear corner.

Unless you're planning an all-point's resto, I wouldn't worry about what stock routing was. The nice part about a 6 is there's enough extra length to give some options.

Edit - that link is to my CJ6 Blog:

Nose around a bit for more CJ6 ideas...and some pics of the one you now own..;)

if you go to any napa or parts store have them look up the muffler for the exhaust for your 71 cj6. there will be a diagram which shows the entire exhaust.

I would recommend you purchase the FSM for your JEEP, as it has the factory diagram for routing. I believe you'll see the passenger side exhaust pipe came down and then turned inward just aft of the oil pan and hooked into the drivers side exhaust and then routed aft with a drivers side behind rear wheel exit. Since the Saginaw swap was performed, pay close attention to where the drivers side exhaust (factory front dump) will be routed. On my '71 CJ-5, the P/S swap required that I go to an aftermarket exhaust header for clearance. HTH... good luck!
