Well I broke down and bought a top for the old (72) CJ5. Its a good top (bestop Supertop) and I'm happy with the fit. But now I have exhaust being sucked back up inside the Jeep when I'm driving. Its not enough to be dangerous, but it gets in your cloths and you smell like Jeep exhaust for the rest of the day. I tried Jeeping Naked, but my wife doesn't like the kind of people who are following me home.

The previous owner had installed some El Camino like mufflers and dual exhaust coming straight out the rear. I believe that the factory setup (304) was a drivers side, behind the rear wheel, exit with a 90 degree turn down. I plan on taking it back to that anyway in an effort to get rid of the "cherry bomb" mufflers that the P.O. installed, but everything is cash dependant, and this may move it up on the schedule.

Has anyone else addressed this? Do you think going back to the stock configuration will fix the problem?

Yeah, stock was a single muffler exiting at the driver's side rear corner. The pipe didn't make a 90 as much as the tip turned down some and the elliptical opening faced mostly down. The stock exhaust was nice and quiet. Made a whooshing noise though at near WOT. I never had any trouble with fumes, even with the side curtains up.

The key to fixing the station wagon effect is to get the exhaust into the air going by the sides of the jeep that will carry it away instead of it building up behind the jeep.

My name is Ryan, and I too smell like Jeep.

Out of all the Jeeps I have owned, the only way I found to route the exhaust to NOT smell it, was to go with all the way to the rear and exit beside the shackles.
All side dumps, regardless of angled tips, will still allow fumes to make it back into the cab or on your clothes.
I've tried it all. 90 degree bends, aiming straight down, running the bend beyond the body/wheel width....but still smelled, and smelled like Jeep.
Believe me, I feel your pain. Everytime I want to get the girlfriend out in the Jeep, I hear it all about smelling exhaust, the potential for headaches, the stinky clothes, etc...
The biggest solution I found was to run top-less using my half doors.
At least my gas tank is in the rear, because on my 1970, I had the under the seat tank which leaked around the sending unit and filler neck, leaving me to smell like exhaust as well as gas. No wonder I didn't get any play in High School.

"all the way to the rear and exit beside the shackles" is exactly how it is now.

Thats how I had it on my 5 as well, and always smelled it.

Corner exit on the 6 seems to be much better.

That's how mine is now and I get gassed out. Going to probably go back to a single exiting at the rear passenger side corner (similar to stock).

Mine exits straight out the back. Fuel tank is in the bed. I do get fumes unless I drop the windshield. Then I dont have any problems.

To Code Red: Yeah, but you got new tires & wheels!

That's how mine is...a horizontal 90 degree bend right in front of the rear x-member on the drivers side...stock position as far as I know. My suggestion would be to just drive faster. You'll outrun it:shock:

As you know I dont keep a top on mine...no problem unless it rains, or gets to cold, or gets to hot, or gets to humid, or frogs fall from the sky...and so it goes.

Original CJ5- I'm very happy with the tires/wheels. I've driven it to Alabama and back twice (once in the rain). No problems on I-85 at 65-70mph. I do get a good bias ply flat spot thump-thump-thump on cool mornings, but I'm driving it every day and very happy.
