I know this subject has been seriously addressed around this site but I have a question for some of you.

I picked up a jeep t-18 out of a j-10 with a dana 20 attached to it for $200. I know their is a few different short shaft kits out there now but I was just wondering if anybody has taken a ford t-18 input shaft out and just installed it in a jeep t-18. Is this even possible or am I just dreaming here?

I guess I dont' know if the externals are the same or what the difference between a short shaft kit and ford t-18 input shaft are?

    Thanks for any info!!

Yes, it'll work. I think that member HudsonHawk did this. The short shaft kit is the Ford shaft AFAIK. There may be some changes to the retainer, and the pilot bushing is different. The only case where this will not work is in the close ratio CJ-5/Commando transmission... you can't mix the close ratio and wide ratio gears.

The bolt pattern is different on the front of the Jeep T-18, compared to the Ford, but IIRC you can drill the T176/T150 (and SR4/T4/T5 - same casting, different pattern) bell to work.

Anything to watch for or grab off a ford t-18 if I can come across one?
I know where I can pick up a ford t-18 for hardly nothing. I checked my jeep t-18 and spun the input shaft and counted 6 and some turns on the output yoke. I would say this is the sought after tranny?

Yes, the J-trucks only came with the wide ratio transmission, 6.32:1 1st. That's the transmission you want. $200 is a good price!

If you want to, you can use the mainshaft and adapter from the Jeep transmission and the case and gears from the Ford, and have a Ford T-18 with a Texas pattern adapter. This will bolt up to the T150/T176 Ford-style bell with no changes. Some drilling and tapping is still required at the adapter end. Nick covers this in detail in an older post - search, and if you can't find it, I can link to it when I get home.

As alreadys stated the Ford shaft is the short shaft. The bearing retainer is definitely different. If putting up against an AMC or Ford motor you can use the ford bearing retainer as is. If an amc motor you will need to have the id of the pilot machined or buy one already done. If bolting to a different motor I'd need more info to tell you what needs doing. Make sure the Ford input has the same # of teeth the Jeep input has. If the Jeep T-18 turns around 6 times to one turn of the output shaft that is the lower first gear of 6.32-1 and is the one most people want. Most Ford T-18's are also 6.32-1 also but there were some 4.03-1 versions. The 6.32-1 version of the T-18 has 17 teeth on the input shaft. Nickmil.

    Thanks Nick,
I will be going to check out the ford t-18 tommorow. So where can I get the machined pilot? This is going behind a amc 360. Will I have to have the jeep pilot machined or the ford pilot machined. I don't mean to sound dumb:rofl: I am new to this and their are not very many jeep guys in my hometown so whatever I do has probably not been seen around here.
