    I went the whole gambit.
T90 to SM465 with advance adapters shaft upgrade
    350 Chevy crate motor
18 twin stick with new gears and rebuild
    drive shaft modifications
    drop down for tranny mount
    tranny isolation pads from A/A
    New clutch and throwout bearing
    rebuilt the tranny
not to self, the transfer case and tranny DO NOT share the same oil anymore with the advance adapter kit, TOTALLY SEPERATE.
Tranny sits higher at top and lower at bottom, moved towards back, so driveline modifications are going to be needed.
Pulled the thing apart three times to get it lined up and everything drilled. Have glass body so a lot of bad language and tool flinging was going on.. Took that body off at least six times.

    Nice set-up Dana.

I've been happy with the T90/D18 combo. Herm is gonna send me rebuilt T90/D18 for $1100 shipped with the core charges. That's a lot of cash. Not sure that I have the technology to rebuild them myself...

Anyway, for that money, I'm sure I could do the SM465 swap. Guess I need to know if it's worh it or not...

Dennis I would think the granny gear would make for easier pushing of sprints. But since i have never done it I don't know any details other then you get behind the guy and give him a push.

Speed is the key to pushing sprints. The granny would be handy on the trail, so the jury is still out. I have to wait for a price quote from Herm to make an informed decision.

Yeh I don't know how fast they got to be going before they can put the cars in gear.

The cars are actually in gear before you push them. Since there are no starters or clutches in them, they have a direct drive box. It's either in gear or out of gear. They wait until the oil pressure is up before throwing the power switch. Usually around 35-40 mph they'll fire...

Ok see how much I know. I guess I will pay more attention at RIR this year since I am going to both nights of racing this year, Sprints on Friday night Silvercrown+IRL on saturday night.

Be sure to buy a pit pass and check the cars out. Drivers are normally happy to answer questions for you as well ;)

For that much I'd consider looking into the 465 swap. Just a side note, I rebuilt my D18 with about as crude of tools as nessisary. Its actually pretty easy to tear everything apart and put it back together with minimal amount of "special" tools. Bout the only thing you "might" need to do is have bearings pressed off the shafts. Didn't take mine off so don't know on that one.;)

btw. If you really want to do the sm465, I've got one with a chevy bellhouse attached with the fork and throwout bearing included. I peeked inside and it looks really clean. You could rebuild it for peace of mind, but I'll bet it'll last a long time yet.

Thanks for the offer Brian, but I just got word back from Herm. Another $300 if I get the 465/D18 set-up from him.

I think I should just pull the T90/ D18 out and rebuild them myself. I am having a hard time justifying $1100...

    Mike,
Running manual steering, hate it but wanted to get it on the road. Last step is brake upgrades and power steering and this will be complete. I am considering selling and moving on to another project, bigger perhaps. I will leave the last picture I have of it put together.

Take a look at this bracket I made to fit a common floor jack (in
    http://home.swbell.net/tape-rr/bracket1.jpg
    http://home.swbell.net/tape-rr/bracket2.jpg

case you dont have a tranny jack) IMHO, this is a very safe rig to use. The channel is "U" shaped bought at Home Depot for around 10 bucks. I simply popped the round bracket off the floor jack and drilled it to accept two blts to hold the channel. The channel is then drilled to accept the factory transmission mount which was bolted to it. Bolt the home made bracket right back on the tranny. The longer end of the channel goes towards the transfer case which happens to be directly in line. The channel ended up being about a inch lower than the transmission mount, but a wedge of wood snugged this right up. I then wrapped the entire tranny/tcase assemble with a strap and under the arm of the floor jack, and much to my amazement, I pulled the tranny back and the thing just stayed put pretty as pie. Didnt even wobble. One man operation. Lower the jack and out she comes. I plan on re-installing in reverse order. Hope this helps.
My first suggestion (been picking everyone's brain with my own questions, and this is my chance to chime in)

Good luck and be safe..that unit weighs a ton.

Dennis, the offer is still open for you to come over and help/hang out and drink my  while I re-do the T90/D18 in Old Yeller. I just got all the parts in from Novak to do it up, all I need to do now is to line up the time and clear enough space in the garage to Git-Er-Dun!

You wanna pull yours and bring it over? We could do a two-fer deal...

Dennis, it's not that bad of a job as long as you can manage the time to study and understand the procedure outlined here
    and here.

Good luck in whichever way you go.

I rebuilt my T-90 with no book /video / or help . I just wish I would have had a set of snap ring plyers. I got my T-98 apart right now and plan on slaping it together when my kit comes in. Old strait shifts are a breeze , now when you get into the new 5 and 6 speeds prepare to get a head ache.

I wouldn't order the video. These old transmissions ara piece of cake. The dana 18 can be stripped and rebuilt in about 4 hours if its clean.
