I have a 1999 TJ and just acquired a 1973 CJ-5, and am unfamaliar with CJ specs and hoping for some help. First off... what fluids do the stock axles , transmission and Model 20 transfer case like? Needless to say this weekend is a fluid flush!

The plans are to start with replacing seals & gaskets on the engine and..
    New thermostat.
    Centriforce clutch
    DUI distributor & wires
Master cylinder & brake pads (stock style)
    Painless elect. harness
    Motor Mounts (polyurethane)

What does the transmission need to have to be happy & reliable again? Is it pretty much a gasket deal?

Any thoughts/suggestions on these components? Anything works better/worse for this Jeep? Anything obvious I'm missing? The Jeep hasn't been turned over in five years. Teenager ripped out the wiring harness and never got around to putting another in.

Its pricey but I'm a firm believer in Royal Purple Max-gear Synthetic. Its compatible w/ every gear box in the jeep, even L/S diffs. Be sure and clean the old fluid out good w/ kerosene and dry well regardless of the fluid you go with. Its always better to start clean.:v6:

There's a factory manual online for '72 at www.c104.net that may answer a lot of your questions. The '72 and '73 have minimal differences.

Not sure what you mean about the "gasket deal." Oil leaks are a tradition with Jeep vehicles, so use your judgement. Put new oil in it and drive it.

On the page, there's a link called "Tech Manual".
In that year, there's only one manual for all Jeep products, so it doesn't matter that they call it a Jeepster manual.

    Cheers! Tim
